Preemies

Hybernation

I hear some preemie moms talk about hypernation.  My girls are 6 months born at 34 weeks and 5 days.  We have pretty much been inside since they were born except for doctor visits,  How much hybernation do you moms do for the winter? Do you take them around just family? Or just no stores and restaurants and playgroups?  I am going to be a wreck this flu season and RSV season.

Re: Hybernation

  • talk to your doctor about how strict you need to be.

for us, we were on completely quarantine through April. That meant limited visitors, and those had rules. They couldn't be sick, or around anyone sick. Smokers had to change clothes and not smoke before they came over. EVERYONE had to wash up immediately upon coming in.

We took him nowhere except the doctor's office.

  • My son is a 26 weeker he came home 11/29/08 and we stayed inside until May 09.  He went to the doctor and went to my parents for Christmas day and thats it...  We are beginning that process again as flu and rsv season are here.  We will probably go out a little more but not much.  Its tough but a healthy baby is worth it!!  hang in there!

    Ditto this.

We do plan to take him to say my parent's house - who are very careful about washing hands, disinfecting, not allowing sick visitors, etc.

We will probably not allow any children over - maybe very occasionally if they are healthy.

I cannot wait until this season is over!

  • DS was born at 32w6d and was mostly a feeder/grower. our ped didn't make us stay inside, just use common sense about not going to malls and into crowded places. we make sure everyone washes up before holding him at family functions.
  • Us too - we didn't leave the house with him unless there was a doctor's appt. until April but it wasn't that bad because it was mid-Feb. when we brought him home and in MN when it's -40 I don't want to leave my house unless I have to...with or without a kid - lol.

We had a few visits but had the same type of strict rules as some of the previous posters mentioned - and really, most visitors were bringing us dinner and seeing us so they didn't even go near DS anyway.

This was our approach as well...

  • I wouldn't say we are quite going into "hibernation" mode. ?We are being extra careful about visitors and obviously not going into crowded places, but we are attending family functions as long as everyone is well. ?We are also going to "uncrowded" restaurants. We live in NYC and a couple of local restaurants understand our situation and give us a secluded table.

  • My mom and MIL watch him while I'm at work so he goes their houses, but they don't take him anywhere. We're planning to take him out just for Dr. appts and family functions will be at house so we can restrict the "sick" people and enforce everyone washing their hands. I already have handwashing signs up. I know so many people that are sick already :( Four people at my job had the swine flu so I'm scared to take him anywhere.
