Ear infection with the tubes in...got a question

If your kid had tubes and an EI, did it actually stink or was it just the discharge out of nowhere .... ?and when the frick do we take him in ?? ?

Thank you.

  • Oh, man! EI with tubes. We have an appt. with an ENT in a few weeks.
  • Pretty sure, yeah. ?He's acting like it, plus ear goo. ?He got tubes end of July and has been fine since. ?Until a couple of days ago. ?This is a new one on me. ?They gave us ear drops, we're doing that, but ... he's a mess!

  • Oh gosh, it's been a while...let me see what I can remember.

With DD1, she got tubes in January (when she was 10 months old).  It took over two weeks for the drainage to clear up--after two types of drops and finally oral antibiotics.

Then she had an EI around her first birthday.  I don't remember a smell, I just remember the drainage.  We took her in right away (I don't think we *just* treated with drops--she had some stubborn drainage so we knew the drops wouldn't cut it).  If they can culture the drainage crap they can prescribe the appropriate antibiotic.

I think she had one more EI after that a couple months later and then nothing.  Her tubes came out, one just after she turned two, the other at her 3 year well-check, with big gobs of wax--both doctor assisted.

Sorry to hear you are dealing with more of this!  Not much consolation, but at least the tubes are doing their job.

  • Just wanted to add that each time she had an EI after tubes, she had to have an oral antibiotic in addition to drops (I think we also did drops).  The drops alone did not cut it.

  • You should have gotten ear drops to use if there is discharge.  It fixes them up in no time and you don't have to go to the ENT.
  • The drops should help after like...day 3.  If his ear is still funky, call the ENT for an oral antibiotic.

Then there's also a chance the tube is out...which...would SUPER suck!

  • Welcome to my world! My daughter is 16 months and got tubes in April. Everything was fine until mid-June, we have had an EI at least once a month since then. Drops alone don't work, she has to go on an oral antibotic as well. We went back to the ENT yesterday and she has fluid but no infection (right now, it probably will be tomorrow). We go back in two weeks to determine if we have to go in for round two of tubes. I didn't even know that was an option. Call the doctor.

Sorry your little guy is going through this....it sucks.
