Pregnant after a Loss

When to start big purchases

Like I've said before, DH is adament about waiting till 20 weeks for the big stuff.  I want to get the crib, glider, and other furniture type items ordered or at least picked out soone than that so that we can be sure that they'll be here within a reasonable time frame.  When did you start the big purchases?  And when did you register for other stuff?

Re: When to start big purchases

  • I had stuff picked out from super early.  I had my "boy" items and my "girl" items.

We purchased the crib/changing table around... maybe 27-28 weeks?  We purchased our glider, stroller, and bassinet only recently.  However, we budgeted for stuff which is why we waited.  I would've purchased the stuff sooner if I could.

  • We registered and ordered furniture right after our big u/s at 19 weeks!

  • We've casually looked to get some ideas.  But we're going to start seriously looking this weekend.
  • I was about 15-20w when we got the crib and stuff...of course nothing gender specific until after 20, but some of the big stuff we ordered because they told us it might take 8-10 weeks. ?We then ordered and got it in 10 days! ?But whatever...we planned in advance! ;)

  • we didn't buy or even start shopping for anything until after 25 weeks, but that's just because we were moving out of state and I didn't want to buy anything until we had moved... that being said we did it as soon as we could after we got here!  I ordered the glider around 26 weeks and the dresser and crib at 27 weeks.

It depends on where you order from and what brand you're going with, but you might want to know that it's going to take 8-10 weeks for my glider (Best Chair) to come in so I'm glad we didn't wait any longer than we did!  The crib and dresser we got from BRU and they only take 7-14 days, but I have a friend who special ordered her crib from somewhere else and it took 3 months to get it so if you have the time to do it now I say it's better to not put it off Smile

  • W/ DD I think we started getting the crib, changer, etc. around 25-28 wks. I remember we got the glider for Christmas, so I was around 34 weeks. We had the nursery totally together at about 37 weeks.

  • viability (24 weeks).
  • We still have nothing. We've looked, but haven't decided on anything. I don't know if I'm going to register at all, because I want to buy our big things, and I figure most of the women who will be at my shower are already mothers and will have a pretty good idea of what I'll need!

I think we'll probably do our 'big purchases' sometime soon, but we won't actually need anything for a couple of months after she's born, except for the PNP. We have an antique carriage that will be her newborn bed, and then we'll be doing the PNP in our room for a few months. That will have a changing table on it, so we don't need that right away either. I think I'm sorta procrastinating because I know we may move before or soon after she gets here, and I don't want to have to move more stuff!!!

  • I got what I found to be really good advice on this. My friend told me to at least order your big ticket items early, have them here by about 20 weeks. No need to assemble the crib and other items, but have them on hand in the event of any suprises . After 20 weeks you can fill in the gaps with more gender specific items and so forth, but order and pick out your really important items first. We bought the glider, crib, car seat & stroller. We felt like everything else could absolutely wait.

I found it was very helpful, put my mind at ease and helped us stay ahead of the curve. I had a tough time though given my losses. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop so it wasn't easy, but I'm glad we did it.
