I don't remember personally. I got way way too many at showers and stuff. Baby bargains has a great list though, I'd look for you but mine is packed with the maternity clothes! GL!!

Since you don't know what you're having (we didn't either), here's what I suggest:
Get about 6-8 newborn onesies, and maybe 5-7 NB sleepers. ?Also some teeny tiny socks. ?When they're very little sleepers is all they need (and you're changing them so much you don't really want to dress them in anything fancy). ?Trust me, even if you have a normal size baby s/he will be in NB stuff for at least a few weeks. ?And you often need more than one in a day, because they pee/poop/spit up all over themselves. ?You'll also want a few hats, blankets, etc. ?
Then get 8+ 3 month onesies, and maybe a couple of 3 month sleepers. ?But don't get a lot because you'll want gender specific stuff. ?
BTW, with onesies - I like the Carters onesies, as opposed to the Gerber ones. ?Gerber are MUCH smaller and thinner than Carters, and don't hold up very well IMO.?
I had about 10 onesies, 7 sleepers, some cotton pants, socks and a couple cute outfits. I felt I needed a sleeper for each day... but I was only doing laundry about once a week and sometimes she would spit up on them.
Lots of sleepers. DS wore sleepers almost exclusively for the first few weeks of his life. They're great b/c they're easy to get on and off and they'll fit better. DS was so little that even NB pants fell right off of him! Plus you won't have to deal with socks that won't stay on anyway. I recommend button up sleepers, so that when you are changing LO in the middle of the night, you don't have to unzip the whole thing and get them all chilly to get to their diaper (though some people prefer the zippered ones so you don't have to deal with all the buttons, so I guess its a personal preference). Have enough that you can go through a couple per day before you get around to doing laundry, b/c there will be multiple clothing changes each day! I had maybe 8 or so? Hats are great too, to keep their little heads warm, especially since it'll be cooler when your LO is born. I second the PP who said carter onesies over gerber b/c gerbers are thinner and run smaller- so they're harder to get over their head. Oh, and its not "clothing" persay, but get a pack of receiving blankets (square ones were the best for swaddling for us) b/c we almost always had DS wrapped up in a receiving blanket for the first couple of weeks. It was a nice extra layer to keep him cozy.
You'll get a TON of stuff right after your LO is born, everyone will send you clothing (especially since you're having a surprise) so if you just get the basics now, you'll be good.
