Preemies

Words & phrases I would like to ban

from my presence for the next few months:

Shot
Vaccine
Swine Flu
RSV
"too new"
"Oh, I know someone with a preemie..."
"...And (s)he's doing great now"
"Oh, he'll be fine.." (unless said by an actual medical professional involved in our care.)

Feel free to add to this list.

Re: Words & phrases I would like to ban

  • I love this list.  Some more:

    Desats
    Spells
    human milk fortifier
    "it's time to pump again"
"...just needs to learn to eat and she'll be home"

  • OH! Toledo, that list took me back. I feel for you.

It also reminded me of a few more:

    Therapy
    Speech
    "is he walking?"
    "crawling?"
    "delay"
    Antibiotic
    "ear infection"
    surgery

  • Loading the player...
  • Is he talking yet?  Can he say my name, etc etc etc?

when are you coming home again?  (why can't these people come to us!?!)

I am sure I have more but my brain is fried.

  • It's just a little cold he won't catch it.

    Oh you worry too much.

Give the boy some real food, it will be fine.

  • Oh God, Katie.. My biggest one:

"Have you tried...." (Usually relating to food)

I just want to scream. NO! I never thought to offer him food from my plate. NO! I never thought to try ice cream. NO! I never thought to hand him a spoon. No! I've never offered him a cup.

Apparently they think I'm stupid, nevermind the team of therapists.

My friend had this issue with her family. He daughter has severe severe food allergies...her family thought she was nuts. Finally got to the point that she showed them all the drs reports so they would leaver her alone.

  • Well, you'd think the TUBE sticking out of his stomach would be a fairly good indicator that he has a MEDICAL condition and not just a stupid mother

Maybe the tube needs big flashing lights...like Hello  don't give this baby food it could cause problems!?!     Family grrr!

  • "Just relax and don't worry about how much you're pumping."

Um, DD eats 9-12oz/day...I'm lucky to pump 1/2oz!  I'm pretty sure relaxing isn't going to help me at this point!

  • All from my trip to the mall yesterday:

    "Was he early?"

"That stroller is way too big!  He'll get lost in there."

In response to stating her actual age, "Nooooooo (with a doubting inflection)."

    "She's so tiny!"

"Let me go in the back to see if we have shoes small enough for her."

I guess that's all.  We were there less than an hour.  And, someone called me ma'am.  :(

  • "Have you pumped yet?" (My DH)
  • Tricia - I hate the "I know a preemie and now he's 6'2" or a lawyer or whatever...." ugh!!!

    Also hated hearing:

    "You worry too much"

"Will she ever be off reflux medication?"

"Do you feel safe giving her reflux medication"

"She's soo skinny, don't you guys feed her?"

And the latest....when I tell people we want to have another baby...there is usually a long pause, with a concerned look and then "oh.....(scramble to find words), I didn't think you would have anymore children"

  • I have heard all of these. One I really got tired of was "oh, look at the brand new baby!" heard that one for months.

or the "Don't worry soo much, she will get there, eventually."

oh yeah, and the medical term "failure to thrive" if you ever want to make a mother feel like a total "failure" tell her this.

  • "You don't actually have to ____ (insert one of several recommendations from our pediatrician).  If baby is breastfed, she should gain weight fine."

I thought of this board yesterday when DH told me about taking DD with him to the grocery store and hearing one of the sample-givers talk about the preemie they knew.  And wouldn't you know ... "he/she is just fine now!" Confused

  • "are you going ______?" insert name of place that is filled with germs and dirty people during RSV season

"Did you see what she did?"  Referring to my hubby who I love to death, but doesn't have the slightest clue about how sick our baby can get, as he showed his MIL the "my tiny hands" stop sign on his seat.  Thank God she set him straight.

  • All of the above.  And then add....

    But they look Normal now...

How's the eating going? Are they eating yet?

So when will they get off the feeding tube?

Why don't you just not feed them the tube formula and see if they get hungry enough to eat?

But that was last year, they should be okay to come out now, right?

Are they sleeping through the night? No, well you should really just let them cry it out... (from a singleton parent who's ONLY kid isn't hooked up to a machine pumping continuous formula into their stomach so that if they CIO they vomit over and over until they're calmed down)

  • I know I'm late to the party, but this one is killing me...

"But I've heard that kids need to get sick - that it's better for them to not be so protected from germs.  A little cold will make him stronger. Kids need to get out and explore the world."

Oh God, YES. And yeah, germs make the immune system stronger -IF THE CHILD SURVIVES THEM.

I swear, we should get like 2 free head punches/day.
