XP from SAL: Spotting...please talk me down

I had an internal ultrasound (where we saw a heartbeat), pap and internal exam on Monday.  The doctor said I would spot afterwards and not to worry.  I did spot a little, but it stopped by Monday night.  Fast forward to last night, I started to spot a little (brown).  Then this morning nothing.  About 30 minutes ago I felt something and went to the bathroom and there was a lot of brown blood.  Now every time I wipe it's there (I am a little crampy too) and it looks kinda redish brown. I called the doctor and they said to wait it out.....I am freaking out now. Thoughts, experiences??

  • i can not believe your doctor is making yuo wait it out. what do they want you to wait for? i can understand that they don't want you to panic-- and i don't think you should-- but i also understand that you must be concerned, and rightfully so. when do they want you to call back/how long are you supposed to wait?

  • Completely normal. Now since you are PG, there is more blood flow down there! Your Dr, and the Internal just aggrevated it more.

  • I would just try to relax, rest & put your feet up.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this, I know it has to be scary.

  • Brown blood = old blood, so its probably still from the internal work earlier in the week.  Drink lots of water, take it easy, and don't worry, brown blood isn't something that is usually a bad thing!
  • It's completely normal to spot after an internal & transvag u/s.

It's completely normal to be a little crampy this early.

Brown blood = old blood, which was probably related to the internal.  Also completely normal.

Relax and take it easy this weekend if you can.  There's nothing your dr can do - another u/s would only aggravate the spotting and make you worry more.   (I know this is way easier said than done).

  • I went through a m/c back in June that started with spotting (although I hadn't heard the heartbeat yet - only 5 weeks or so along). I spotted for about 4 days before the red blood started and the doctor agreed to see me.

Anyway, if it happened to me again I would demand to be seen (in the nicest way possible, of course) since the unknown is so difficult for me to handle. In dealing with patients with a prior loss, most doctors are very considerate. It's probably nothing and just related to your internal earlier this week but if you're really worried call back and ask for another ultrasound.  Good luck

  • I spotted brown and then red blood my entire first tri with DS.  It doesn't always signal something bad - like pp said brown blood is old blood so I wouldn't worry - esp since you just had an internal.  If it keeps happening, call them again and ask to be seen - they should be willing to ease your concerns with another u/s.

  • I am 6 weeks 2 days pregnant.

I started spotting yesterday, it was quite heavy and I clotted (red yesterday, brown today). I know the exact feeling you are going through. I called my doctor and they got me in for an ultrasound this morning. She told me that the placenta hasn't attached itself yet and it's cleaning things out so it can do that. I freaked out too. But as long as your doctor doesn't seem worried, I wouldn't worry much either. Keep calm and relax until you go to the doctor. I was told to keep it very low, rest a lot and lifting at all.

     Keep us updated!

  • I hope this makes you feel better but I've been spotting on and off since week 7 and the past few days it's been every time I go to the bathroom, AND I've been crampy. I had an u/s last week and heard the heartbeat on the doppler yesterday. Apparently, the baby is ok and there is no specific reason that I'm spotting.

Every pregnancy is different. Some people don't spot at all. Some people get their periods in their pregnancy. I know it's scary. Call your doc again and say you're really nervous and really need some peace of mind. Maybe they'll tell you to come in.

  • It's probably old blood.  Brown blood is old blood.  Red blood means active bleeding.

  • Although you shouldn't panic or assume the worst, any spotting is worth getting checked out. I don't think you should ever dismiss it as "probably nothing." Be a pain, Make your self known, and don't let the doctors dismiss your fears! But in the mean time put your feet up, and drink lots of water, and I am sure you know this but I am going to say it any way NO SEX or any other vaginal irritation! Till after your doctor gets a look and say its ok again.
