Flu Shot...yay or nay?

Hi Ladies! I don't think I have ever posted on here before! I am 29 weeks pregnant, with my third child! It's a boy!

I never considered getting a flu shot until I heard on the news this morning that 28 out of 100 pregnant women that get the swine flu have died. That's pretty scary! So I am just curious, how many of you have gotten a flu shot and did you request a shot that is Thimerosal free? Did you worry about the effects that the shot may have on the baby (i.e. autism)?

TIA!!!

Re: Flu Shot...yay or nay?

  • Congrats! I always get the flu shot, pregnant or not.

The study that linked shots to autism was proved to have been falsified. so no I don't worry.

Some people worry about vaccines for their children containing unnecessary toxins, in which case they go on a delayed schedule.  After researching it, we decided to stay with the traditional schedule

  • Definite yay. My OB said the regular shot is fine, and I believe that before I even asked her.

Just an FYI, the flu shot that is available right now does NOT protect against the H1N1 virus (swine flu). That vaccine should be available at the end of this month.

  • Ive never gotten a flu shot so I was antsy to have one but my OB recommended that my husband and I both get the regular flu shot and  the H1N1 (when its available) so I followed her suggestion and got it. What really forced me to get it was the fact that my baby will be born right in the middle of flu season and will have a very limited immune system so even if I dont get the flu he/she might and it could be VERY bad for an infant.

I was also freaked out by the statistics on the news, but keep in mind that that is 28 out of 100 pregnant women who got H1N1 so badly they ended up IN THE ICU. Far more pregnant women got the flu and it was treatable and they were fine, so dont let it panic you TOO much.

  • Thanks Ladies! You were a big help!
  • I plan on getting the flu shot. I do not have any concerns about it being linked to Autism.

  • Walgreens offers a preservative-free (thimerosal-free) shot for pregnant women. I opted for that "just in case."
  • I'm going against the curve here with a big NAY!

I don't usually get a flu shot and I'm especially not going for any new vaccines. The 28/100 statistics are misleading, there isn't any base data provided in those articles -- like how many confirmed cases of H1N1 in pregnant women have there been total?

If you're a healthy person with a good diet and your immune system is not impaired, I would not do it.

you do realize that the regular flu shot is new every year, right?  It's changed annually.
