Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Please help with nocturnal baby

I've read through many posts and tried to use the techniques you ladies have shared but nothing is putting my new baby to sleep at night.

She sleeps through the day even when I attempt to wake her. She breastfeeds well and has enough poop/pee diapers. But when 10 pm rolls around, she is wide awake. I've tried having her in our room and nursing when she wakes but it's at least every hour and it messes up my husband and obviously my sleep.

So I've stayed out on the couch, trying to nurse and soothe her, trying each time to lay her down but she cries hard everytime I try. I just cry everyday because I get 3 hours of sleep at the most and everyone assures me it gets better but I don't know how much more I can do this.

PLEASE help me with anymore sage advice or things I should know! I really respect your opinions/experience. Thanks!

  • I'm right there with you and it's totally normal. Just let her keep feeding on demand and try and get as much sleep as you can when she is sleeping during the day. Last night we let DD cluster feed until about 11:45 p.m. and it was exhausting, but she had two good 3 1/2 hour stretches of sleep which made for a much happier family today.

  • our son was similar at that age. just do everything on demand & it will eventually work itself out. you learn to balance sleep & housework during the day. i noticed when i warm his milk he would sleep a little better. i noticed you BF, so idk if you pump it might help. best of luck to you!

  • i remember those days...it seriously gets better...8 weeks was the magic number for us.  in the meantime, get a swing.  dd lived in her swing for the first 6 weeks.  we felt bad leaving her there so we camped out in the living room with her and got 2-3 stretches of continuous sleep.  i also found that a blow dryer worked wonders.  dd liked the warm air and the loud noise surprisingly calmed her momentarily.  gl and try to rest when your lo is resting (i know, easier said than done).

  • I too am going through the same thing. Ive given up all hope and when she finally goes into deep sleep at around 9am, is when I go into deep sleep. Just like yours, my LO sleeps like a log allll day long, not its 10:45 at night, and her eyes could not get any wider. I tried giving her formula at night, since you can go longer in between feedings, but last night it was like it was laced with caffiene, she was even more awake. So Im sucking it up and BFing her on demand.  I prefer it anyway, its relaxing.
  • Whew! Thanks so much for the advice! I thought I was the only one and 'm starting to go loopy from lack of sleep and I feel guilty for sleeping during the day or the few times I get to see my husband.
