The actual insertion of the IUD did not hurt for me (some slight cramping though), but the use of the speculum was a bit painful - although not as much as it was before I had a baby.
Everyone is different though, I know people who had more pain and discomfort with it than I did.
I had one put in a few years ago, and it was painful. I had taken some Advil before I went and then after I was done. I suggest this! They told me it was less painful for people who have had children before, so maybe that does make a difference.
I had cramping for a few seconds and that was it. I had totally freaked myself out after reading stories on here, so anything was probably going to be better than what I was expecting.

it was a quick cramping sensation....be sure to take tylenol an hour before you go... it was nothing compared to the contractions i had a few months earlier...lol

It wasn't so much a cramping feeling for me, as a pinching kind of sensation. But it's quick.
