Baby scratching face...

I am lost as to what to do. LO discovered his hands which is WONDERFUL because he loves to put them in his mouth and sucks on them and can self soothe when he doesn't have his Paci.  It means that I am not stumbling down the hall every 10 min to retrieve a lost paci... it ALSO means that his face looks like he just did some epic battle with a tiger.  Seriously it is disturbingly scratched up!  I try to keep his nails short, but it still happens.  I have him sleep in a gown with fabric that folds over his hands but he works his way out of those easy... I am concerned to use gloves/mittens because since his hands are in his mouth so much I worry that he will eat off the mittens and choke on one.

ANY ideas?

TIA

  • I have the same problem. And I have no solutions. I thought about socks on her hands so they'd stay on, but she sucks on them so much I have the same concern as you. I clipped her nails AGAIN today and ran my fingers over them multiple times to make sure I didn't miss anything.

  • My DD scratches her face horribly too when she is fussing. The only thing that works for us is mittens.
  • Sounds like I may have to accept a baby that looks like he lost a battle :(... poor little guy :(
  • Have you tried an emory board/nail file to dull the edges of his nails?

my little has scratched himself pretty badly before.  I used the mittens and it was ok.

  • i gotta clip LO's nails every three or four days... otherwise he's like wolverine, and not just on his own face... everyone else is fair game too!
