Babies: 0 - 3 Months

It's freakin me out a little

That my 3 week old son has a spot on his bottom gum that looks oddly like a tooth trying to break through.  At first I thought it was a spot of formula on his gums but I tried to wipe it off with my finger and it didn't budge.  It doesn't really feel hard underneath there, but I'm a little iffy about what it could be.

  • It's been known to happen, I even heard some babies can be born with teeth! I hope it's not a tooth, he is so little, good luck!

  • could it be thrush? I don't know if it would be on the gums but it kind of sounds like it.  I would call your dr. if your concerned :)

That was my first thought as well. Thrush supposedly does not wipe off while milk will.

  • huh.  Maybe it is thrush.  What exactly makes them get thrush?
  • I've seen pictures of white things that look like teeth but aren't, but for the life of me, can't remember what they were. I'm sorry I suck!

I don't know how they get it but many babies do get it.  Its a yeast infection in the mouth.  The dr. can give the baby an anti fungal medication to treat it. I just looked it up and it can be on the gums.  I would call the dr. just to see if that is what it is.

Epstein pearls. They can look liek white little teeth but are not, They are little bumps, they are harmless & disappear in a few weeks.

  • My guess would be thrush, it's actually more common with FF babies, not BF and usually forms on the gums/cheeks first.  DS had to go on Nystatin and after that didn't get rid of it we used Gentian Violet.  If you BF, you'll also need to get a script for Nystatin cream for your nipples and you'll want to wash your bras in hot water.  You will also want to sterilize everything that goes in LO's mouth often (we did bottles after every wash) and make sure you rotate pacifiers frequently.

    ...It's basically a yeast infection.

  • My daughter had a neonatal tooth grow after a few days of being born. It happens.
