First time hearing Heart Beat?

I am almost 12 weeks, and I had my appointment today ( and I will get into that in a second) And my Dr. told me it was impossible to hear the heartbeat with the doppler at this point which is sooo not what anyone has told me. So i guess I wonder if you have heard it and when?

Also sorry about the venting but she didn't answer any of my questions and I am just really upset. Has anyone else had bad experiences with their OB's? I already talked to some friends and my sister in law and have an appointment with a new dr. But until then, I am stuck with this lady...

Re: First time hearing Heart Beat?

  • My doc said she usually doesn't even try to use the doppler until after 12w b/c very often you can't hear it that early, which only causes the mom to worry.

I'm sorry your doc didn't answer any of your questions though....I would be concerned too!

  • we had our 1st appt today at 9 weeks and heard the heartbeat with the doppler-it was 180....not sure what to tell you...
  • We heard hb w/transvaginal at 6w3d and doppler at 11w5d.  Did she even try to find it?  I would be upset too.  Maybe interview the other doctor and see if you like him or her better.

  • I first heard the heartbeat with the doppler at 10w5d.  They had no problem finding it.  I heard it again at 11w4d since my first appointment was split into two halves.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Saw and heard on transvag at 8wk. Heard it on doppler at 12wk1day. Dr. said that was great that we heard it, though, because still at that time it might be hard to find. If you are only getting one ultrasound because of insurance, your OB probably didn't want to try it and not find it, then have to do an u/s. That might end up costing you or wasting the u/s. Not sure if this is the case, but could be.
  • Amy - I just heard mine for the first time yesterday and I am 9.5 weeks so it is definitely possible! To be fair, they did tell me that it was unlikely at 9.5 but I asked if we could try anyway and they said sure! I would not worry if you don't hear it just yet, because I have also heard that it all depends on baby's position. However I would be concerned that your OB wouldn't even try when you asked. Any chance you can change?

  • I agree completely with Mariah.  I also heard the hb by doppler at 9.5 weeks, but my OB warned me in advance that it was pretty early (although, she was stunned when she found it immediately!).  I have heard a lot of people who say some docs wont try it until 10-12 weeks just to be sure.

I would also be very concerned that your OB wouldnt answer your questions, etc.  I would switch doctors.  Im so sorry you had such a bad experience. Sad

  • I bought a doppler on amazon.com to have at home and actually heard the heartbeat at 9 w 5 d.  It took about 10 minutes, but I found it, beating away at 175 bpm.  Not sure why the doctor wouldn't at least try! My dr. started with the doppler at 12 weeks and every appointment I've been to, she checks.

  • I heard the heartbeat at 8wk, but it was from the dildocam. My doc said that she doesn't try to hear with a doppler until 12 wks. Mainly because the baby is still behind your pelvic bone.

  • We heard it with the OB Nurse at 9w6d and although she told us not to freak out if we couldn't hear it, she found it immediately beating away at 168-170 bpm. How frustrating your Dr. wouldn't even try!  I would take my business elsewhere... GL!
  • I have had two doctor's appointments so far, and I heard my baby's heartbeat at both. My first appointment was last week and again on Monday.
  • I was in the same boat. I'm 12 weeks and my doctor couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler, but today I saw it for the first time because my doctor ordered an ultrasound.

  • My doctor won't even have me in for a "real" appointment until 12 weeks.  I went in to talk about my history and how the practice works with a nurse, but the first time seeing a dr will be at 12 weeks.  I was a little annoyed with this, but was told that this was normal.  When I hear that so many others get to go in and even have u/s long before that it kind of p---'s me off.  I understand your frustration.  I think I get an u/s on that date though.  I would have insisted that they at least try to find the hb.

  • I was told they can usually hear it at around 10 weeks with the doppler.
  • Thank you everyone. I have my NT scan on tuesday and so I will be able to be sure everything is ok that way at least, but i will meet with my new highly recommended and really nice Dr. on the 26th.

I really appreciate all of the help

  • We heard ours this week at 9w3d.  I heard my son's heartbeat at 9w4d.  She's crazy.
