Comforting baby who is npo?

My LO is scheduled for an upper gi at 10 AM tomorrow and is NPO after midnight tonight.  I'm terrified to think what our night might be like as she normally eats every 2-3 hours through the night.  Has anyone been through this?  Do you have any tips on soothing a sure to be very hungry baby?

  • Are you sure she is 100% NPO??? I work at a Children's Hospital (in pedi derm), but we do procedures in the OR and I know they are told (by the anesthesiology's team) that infants can have pedialyte up to 2 hours before the procedure b/c they are too little to not have anything. I would call and ask! It may be different b/c it is a GI procedure - but I would still ask.

  • Thanks so much for your advice!  I just got off of the phone with the dr and they said she could actually eat right up until the procedure but are concerned that she might not be hungry enough to eat the entire bottle of barium.  That said they bumped the start time of the npo to 3AM and our testing time to 9:30AM.  I feel much better about this now!
  • Good! Are they doing an upper GI? Are they lookign for reflux or esophageal atresia or something?

  • They're doing an upper gi although I couldn't say specifically what they are looking for.  She has been suffering from reflux for a little over a month now and doesn't seem to be getting any better.  We've been through nearly every formula.  She's now on Similac Alimentum thickened heavily with oatmeal.  She takes .8mL of Zantac twice a day. She sleeps at an incline and we hold her up for at least a half hour after every feeding but she's still been projectile vomiting and it comes from both her mouth and nose. She's apirated several times and the night before last it took more than 10 seconds to get her breating again.  She's now hooked up to an apnea monitor.  She barely sleeps because she chokes on the reflux every 15-20 minutes.  It's just been so frustrating.  The dr said the upper gi should give us a better idea as to why she's struggling and what our next step should be.
  • Awww, I'm so sorry! Hopefully you'll get some answers! My friend is going through the same thing with her son! My thoughts and prayers are wtih you guys!
