She refused to do IVF for a lesbian patient b/c of her own religious views. The OB suggested another Dr in the practice who would preform the services. the lady is suing her for discrimination...
hmm. not sure how I feel about that. Isn't it her right to refuse anyone service? Or is that illegal? I guess I thought if you owned your own practice...
either way, I feel bad for the lesbian couple. Hope they found a Dr. that would help them. They should have equal rights.
ETA: i have nothing against lesbians! just think its dumb to sue when there was another doctor that would do it in the same practice.
I agree that there are a lot of frivilous law suits, but I bet the couple is suing over principle.Trying to get the word out there that you shouldn't do that. It's like a Dr. saying no to a patient because they are a different race or religion then they are.
its such BS how some people's views (mostly views belonging to minorities) have to be tolerated/accepted/respected...
and the other people just have to STFU. Their opinion/religion/feelings don't matter and they are made to do things that they dont really agree with just to please others. Its such crap and so not fair.
But does the religioud view say she never does IVF? Maybe this specific dr doesnt do it at all... no necessarily that they are lesbians...is there clarification on which one it is?
Was it the IVF or their Sexual orientation that she had a problem with.
This kinda stuff happens all.the.time.
pharmacists can refuse to give you BC or the morning after pill if its against their religious beliefs. A poster earlier said she had to pay extra co-pays becuase her hospital/practice was catholic so they couldnt order an IUD for her. And many many doctor refuse to even refer a patient to an abortion provider.

I wonder if I can stop teaching my students because of religious reasons and just pass them on to the teacher next door...
The law doesn't promise free and appropriate public healthcare to citizens. It does promise such education. This was an elective procedure- I don't think the patient has a case.
Yeah, she's not going to win the lawsuit. Doctors have rights to refuse patients in these cases, and in all honesty, they should refuse them. Especially since there was another doctor within the same practice willing to do the services.
Think about it - do you want to be under the care of someone who is being forced to see you when they have such strong moral objections to you? Do you really think you're going to get outstanding care and not just the standard care to get by?
Do I think this sucks and wish that more people wouldn't think in such discriminatory fashion - of course. But until that happens, the doctor did exactly what she should have done.
My cousin wanted her tubes tied during the c-section of her 4th baby but wasn't allowed b/c it was a catholic hospital, so she had to do it later at another hospital. This happens all the time. I can't believe that lady is suing, the doctor did the right thing by referring her to someone else...

Maybe those who are going to use their religious beliefs to dictate how they treat patients should not go into medicine.
?
My OB while I was pregnant only supports natural family planning based on religious reasons, and she simply gave me a referral to another doctor for other contraceptive options.... no big deal.
Did I sue based on discrimination? NOPE!
Some people just find it necessary to make a mountain out of a mole hill. And I don't see why you can't practice ANY profession without retaining your beliefs.?
