Pregnant with Asthma???

HI all!!

I have asthma and I treat it with singular daily (for allergies) and a rescue inhaler (does not contain a steroid).  My Dr said it's okay to use this during my pregancy (his motto is to 'treat the asthma first'), but I am still concerned about the development of the baby's lungs, etc.  I have my first appt w/my Dr Oct 14th and will go over all questions with him then.

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this...

Thanks!!!

Re: Pregnant with Asthma???

  • I take albuterol three times a day and I know many other people who did throughout their pregnancy and had no problems. There is no way I could go off albuterol - I'd get really sick and then need some serious drugs.

  • i'm on pulmocort daily for my asthma. . and i have to see my asthma doctor once a month while i'm pg for my asthma. i'm not allowed to take singular for my allergies, so my allergies have been killing me, which i think has now turned into a cold. .

i took the same medication while I was pg with my first and my child developed fine . . asthma people tend to have smaller babies and she was born 8 pounds at 38 weeks . .

i would just confirm the type of meds u r taking with your ob and everything.

  • I have asthma.  I went to see a pulmonologist after I had some problems in May and even an ER visit.  She put me on QVar (beclomethason) for maintenance and I use albuterol as a rescue.  She told me the albuterol is fine and the Qvar has been around for awhile and is approved for use in pregnancy.  Not to worry you, but my dr. told me to not use singulair.  That's what they gave me at the ER, but she said knowing I was trying to get pregnant she wanted me on something that has been around and is proven to be fine for use in pregnancy.  The ER doc said singulair was ok for it, there was a rating system forget what it was, and that it wasn't the safest but it wasn't shown to cause any problems either.  I'd just speak to your doctor when you go, or if you're worried give a call :)

It is true though, a baby that isn't getting oxygen is much worse off than one who's mother takes something like singulair :)

  • I use ventolin.  If you aren't getting enough oxygen, neither is the baby.  That's way more important than what little drug exposure the baby may get.
  • I have asthma. I have spoken to three docs and they all say that my inhalers and allergy meds are harmless.
  • i forgot . . i have zopenex has a rescue inhaler.
  • My asthma and allergies were both way better, so I made it to 11 weeks without any medication.  And then I was a fool and went to a dirt track race and had my first serious asthma attack in months.  So I'm back on daily Singulair and using my rescue inhaler (albueterol) as needed.  Both were approved by my doctor, as was Zyrtec for allergies.  We're having our first hard freeze tonight, so I'm hoping my allergies are calm for a while.

  • I'm still using Singulair along with Ad-Vair and a rescue inhaler when needed. I do worry a bit as well, but when I think of the alternative... what can you really do? Nothing else works for me.

  • Don't worry about it. During my first pregnancy I took singular, rescue inhaler and inhaled steroid. Everything was totally fine. I had an 8 1/2 lb baby. The most important thing is keeping your breathing in check. I was worried at first too, but this time, no worries! I had my OB & asthma allergy dr ok everything I was on, no one was concerned.

  • THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REPLIES!  It really helps to calm the nerves when hearing about other people's situations & that there haven't been any issues.  I'm still going to go over everything w/my Dr.  My apt is Oct 14th. :)
  • I just went to allergy and asthma specialist on Monday and he switched me from advair to pulmicort.  Advair is a category C drug and pulmicort is a category B.  I also use an emergency inhaler, but that's very rare for me.  It's always better to have your asthma under control than not to take drugs.  A severe asthma attack does way more harm to the baby.
