Placing crib mattress at an angle

DH is insisting we place the crib mattress at an angle since we have moved DS to the crib from the bassinett. I am concerned that DS moves so much now when he sleeps (he has ended up sideways at the bottom of the crib) that I am concerned that the angle is causing him to roll down to the bottom of the crib. DH is worried about DS spitting up and choking during the night, but I'm more concerned about DS rolling around and suffocating. Has anyone else heard of this or is doing this? If so, for how long and what age did you begin laying your LO flat?

Re: Placing crib mattress at an angle

  • Your DS will move his head if he spits up and is looking up. I don't know about you but my DS doesn't sleep looking up, his head always falls to one side of the other once he's fast asleep.

DS  has been in his crib (with a flat mattress) since 6 weeks old.

  • We angled the mattress DD's first week in the crib.  It was the only way she would sleep in it.  Every morning she would be in a different position, sometimes completely spun with her feet elevated above her head.  Now we have it flat and she doesn't move at all.  If you need to elevate it, just make sure there is NOTHING in the crib--no bumper, blankets, etc, and your LO should be fine.  Then start decreasing the elevation gradually (we went from a pillow under the mattress to a folded blanket, to a less folded blanket, to flat).
  • I moved the mattress to flat for the very reason you're concerned...but it didn't make a lick of difference. He still rolls all over the place and find him on his tummy, at the foot of his crib, sideways, etc. So I wouldn't worry about the angle at all!
  • DS's is angled slightly, we used a thin pillow under the mattress. He squirms and wiggles and sometimes slides down a little but it has decreased his spit up. I was never worried about him choking on his spit up, but lying flat made his acid worse and I have seen a great difference since we have him sleeping slightly up.
