Parenting after a Loss

preemie milestone delays?

I posted this on the preemie / 0-6 board but thought I would ask here as well-my little guy was born at 36w5d so he's barely a preemie but he really hasn't been focusing on my face at all yet. It seems like he's looking around and focusing on other objects but he won't look me in the eye yet- should I be worried? He will be 7 weeks on Friday... I hope I don't sound like a neurotic mom, but I keep seeing everywhere that most babies do this a lot earlier, and he should be smiling by now too (which he is not, only in his sleep...) Thanks!

Re: preemie milestone delays?

  • M really didn't start to look AT me until she was about 2 months old. And even that was hit or miss. She always looked like she was looking passed me.

I wouldn't worry yet. If he's still not looking directly at you (without a camera), bring it up at your next well visit. And I say without a camera because M would always look right at the camera, but as soon as I moved it.... she'd look away.

    Good luck.

  • My preemie (34-weeker) has been a little late so far with some things.  He didn't really smile until like 8-9 weeks or something.
  • My guy will be 7 weeks on Sat and seems to be the same as what you are describing.  And he was born at 35w1d.
  • My DS was born at 35 wks 3 days and he has been just slightly behind on things compared to a lot of full-termers.  I can't remember when he first focused on my face, I'd have to look it up but I know he didn't smile until he was probably 9 weeks (and even then it was hard to tell if it was an actual smile or "just gas") and he didn't laugh for a long time (quite a bit later than most full-term babes it seemed).
