1st Trimester

I got the flu shot.

At my first appointment 2 days before, I got the flu shot. My doctor said he recommends it and I took it. Did not question much even though I have never taken the vaccine before.

Now I just read the other post below.

I never asked if it was a mercury free version. It is the biggest hospital of the area, maybe they know well enough to give me a mercury free version. Its freaking me out.

They also gave me the shot in the first trimester. Was that okay?

I am scared...of course google does not help, saying that it increases risk of autism and blah blah. I stopped reading.

I wish i was more informed before going into the appointment.

What are your views? Nothing can be done now I know, but anyone had similar experiences?

  • I've read if it is the single dose (which most are) the amount of mercury is less than one can of tuna (which is fine for pregnancy).  Also some doctors want to wait after 1st tri, some say anytime if fine.  I think its just a liability thing because the rate of m/c is high in 1st tri.  Don't worry!

  • I think it is fine. I went today to get one at Walgreens but there was an hour wait so I called my ob and they will give me one when they get their shipment in.

  • Yuor doctor has a medical degree and would not do anything to jeopardize  your pregnancy.  I am sure it is fine.
  • I got mine today too, thimerosol free was all that my doctor's office offered. You should call and ask, it's probably what you got as well. Most offices give thimerosol free (mercury free) or at least in NY they do.

  • I agree with PPs.

I got one on Monday, and while the one I got was thimerisol free, the nurse said that the amt of mercury in it normally is very low (I think she used the can of tuna analogy as well).  I'm also in the first tri, and I was worried about that, but no one at my dr's office seemed concerned, so I figure I shouldn't be either.

I'll add that I've NEVER gotten a flu shot in my life, and so far (knock on wood) I still feel fine.  Don't worry! which I know is easier said than done, but seriously, you're fine.

  • I am getting my flu shot tomorrow.  I called my OBGYN he said it was fine to get it now and didn't say anything about making sure it was mercury free.

I think you will be fine everything is just kind of scary right now.

  • I have to get mine too over the next few weeks.  I work for a hospital in Maryland, and they mandated the vaccine, or we face termination!!

I'm nervous, but I've gotten it pretty much every year I've worked there.  I'll have to ask them about the mercury levels, although I'm sure it's fine.

  • If it makes you feel any better, I went to my family doc to get a TB test (need for work) and he wouldn't give it to me b/c I was preg. He said that he is super conservative and couldn't do it and then gave me my flu shot without blinking.
