Tell me about living in the Nashville area...

We are considering relocating (due to job) to the Nashville area.  I have 2 small children (almost 4 and just turned 1). What areas are known for having the best public schools? Can anyone give us an idea what childcare runs? Pro's and Con's to living in the area?

  • This board is dead.

I live in Willilamson County which supposedly has the best public schools in the state. I don't know because we don't use them. We send our kids to private schools. Sumner County and Wilson also supposedly have decent public schools, but I think it is relative. We came from Mass and I've been disappointed in everything I've seen/read about most of the public schools (that said we have friends who send their kids to the magnet school in Sumner county and love it).

I have a nanny for my 19 mos old. My older 2 boys are in Montessori School. It is about $7k/yr They go 8:15-3:30 and aftercare and beforecare is $5/hr.

  • I have been living in Nashville for the past 7 years, if you tell me what area of Dallas you live in, I can tell you which areas of Nashville would be most comparable.  We live in Brentwood which is South of Nashville located in Williamson County.  I love the community.  Lots of parks, good library, etc.  Ok, dining and shopping.  The best dining and shopping is Green Hills/Vandy Areas (still cannot touch Dallas).  Brentwood/Williamson County schools are the best in TN; but not necessarily what you may be used to in Dallas.  Also, the Oak Hill School (Private) www.oakhillschool.org  is excellent for Pre-K-6th.  Other good private schools in the area, Ensworth, Montgomery Bell Academy (all boys) and Harpeth Hall (all girls).  I hope that helps.  Best of luck with your decision.  Also, I know several people that grew up in Dallas and love it here.

  • I've lived in the Nashville area over 20 years. Grew up in Franklin. I went to private school (Harpeth Academy--now part of Battle Ground Academy--and University School), but the a lot of my friends went to Williamson County schools or magnet schools in Nashville.

Williamson has a great system, and I know that the magnet schools in Nashville are pretty good too.

I love Franklin. If you're looking for nice homes, good parks, and convenient shopping, I would consider living there. The Green Hills, West End and Sylvan Park areas in Nashville are also quite nice. They have older homes (from bungalows to estates) with beautiful parks and lots of dining choices.  I unfortunately don't know too much about the school systems since all my Nashville friends were in private or magnet schools.

  • We are most likely moving to Hendersonville or Franklin. If you can afford Williamson County, move there. They have the best schools in the state. I have a friend who had her children go through the Williamson county schools (they live in Brentwood) and spoke highly about them. She said she never had an issue even in middle school and high school.
  • I currently live in Murfreesboro, 30-45 minutes from Nashville. Many people live here & travel there for work. Murfreesboro is a wonderful place to live i think.. i love it here! I am from a small town so big towns scare me but Mboro is a bigger town with a small town feel. There is hardly any crime here, great schools, parks, ect. i don't know if that is an option for you but thought i'd let you know.. also Mufreesboro isn't the only place around Nashville area.. theres Franklin, Brentwood, Smyrna.. lots of smaller towns where people travel to Nashville to work! Hope that helps!
  • Hello! I have lived in South Nashville for 12 years. I love it and many of the surronding areas. However, I would not send my kids to Metro Nashville schools, which is what will cause us to relocate in a few years as well. I am a teacher in the Rutherford County school system, which includes the cities of Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and LaVergne. If you're looking for a nice city with lots of parks, shopping venues, and great schools I would choose Murfreesboro.

Williamson County, which other posters mentioned, is a wonderful area as well. It contains a top notch school system, and has lots of parks, shopping venues, eateries as well. It's a little pricier than Rutherford County, due to it being a more affluent area with higher property taxes. HTH!

  • Williamson County (Franklin,Brentwood, etc.) has the 3rd best schools in the US. Davidson co. (Nashville) has one of the worst. Unless you go with private schools. Franklin Road Academy, MBA, etc.

  • I'm going to give a shout out for Wilson County - Lebanon/Mt Juliet.  The cost of living (read: housing prices) aren't as high as in Williamson County/Franklin area and the schools are decent too.
