We are considering relocating (due to job) to the Nashville area. I have 2 small children (almost 4 and just turned 1). What areas are known for having the best public schools? Can anyone give us an idea what childcare runs? Pro's and Con's to living in the area?
Re: Tell me about living in the Nashville area...
This board is dead.
I live in Willilamson County which supposedly has the best public schools in the state. I don't know because we don't use them. We send our kids to private schools. Sumner County and Wilson also supposedly have decent public schools, but I think it is relative. We came from Mass and I've been disappointed in everything I've seen/read about most of the public schools (that said we have friends who send their kids to the magnet school in Sumner county and love it).
I have a nanny for my 19 mos old. My older 2 boys are in Montessori School. It is about $7k/yr They go 8:15-3:30 and aftercare and beforecare is $5/hr.
I've lived in the Nashville area over 20 years. Grew up in Franklin. I went to private school (Harpeth Academy--now part of Battle Ground Academy--and University School), but the a lot of my friends went to Williamson County schools or magnet schools in Nashville.
Williamson has a great system, and I know that the magnet schools in Nashville are pretty good too.
I love Franklin. If you're looking for nice homes, good parks, and convenient shopping, I would consider living there. The Green Hills, West End and Sylvan Park areas in Nashville are also quite nice. They have older homes (from bungalows to estates) with beautiful parks and lots of dining choices. I unfortunately don't know too much about the school systems since all my Nashville friends were in private or magnet schools.
Hello! I have lived in South Nashville for 12 years. I love it and many of the surronding areas. However, I would not send my kids to Metro Nashville schools, which is what will cause us to relocate in a few years as well. I am a teacher in the Rutherford County school system, which includes the cities of Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and LaVergne. If you're looking for a nice city with lots of parks, shopping venues, and great schools I would choose Murfreesboro.
Williamson County, which other posters mentioned, is a wonderful area as well. It contains a top notch school system, and has lots of parks, shopping venues, eateries as well. It's a little pricier than Rutherford County, due to it being a more affluent area with higher property taxes. HTH!
