3rd Trimester

Low Iron

Is it common to have a drop in your iron level in the 3rd trimster?  I was just prescribed an iron supplement by my midwife.

Re: Low Iron

  • I don't know if it is common in 3rd tri but anemia is fairly common in pregnant women.  I was anemic when I was younger and then grew out of it but pregnancy brought it back on so I take iron pills now as well.

  • It's pretty common, I tested as anemic and my OB told me it happens a lot. They have me taking an otc iron supplement.
  • Im not sure how common it is. I to have low iron and have to take iron suppliments for it. I know that in the third tri the baby demands more iron and calcium for him/her self. My dr said if you dont eat enough red meats and things its very common for them to drop.
  • ditto. im on iron supplements too. I think around this time, you do need more iron since your body has to produce much more blood than you're use to. It no big deal having to take an OTC iron supplement just remember not to have it with milk and to take it at opposite times that you are taking your prenatal.
  • I read that your iron in the first tri is usually pretty good because you aren't losing all that period blood, but around week 20 it starts to go down as your stored up iron is depleted. It was recommended to take a iron supplement IN ADDITION to your prenatal vits. My doc didn't tell me to but having low iron in the past I know when I get low and it only took one dizzy spell where I almost passed out for me to run to Walmart for some more iron :)

  • I've been on supplements since 2nd tri. Very common.

I use Slow FE. It's a bit more expensive but it doesn't make me sick. I also try to eat red meat once a week and dark leafy greens.

    Good luck

  • I was also diagnosed with low iron and put on an iron supplement at my 28 week appointment.  My doc said this is very common, and included that she was on iron for both of her pregnancies.
