Pap smear WDYT?

I had my first appt today.  The dr did a full physical as well as a pap smear.  I thought this was normal practise but now am wondering.  I am trying not to worry since I started spotting afterward.

Then, when I googled it, a lot of sites came up about miscarriage after a pap.  Now I don;t believe everything I read but does anyone have any credible information on this?

Also as a side note, I don't get an ultrasound until week 20, and he isn't checking my HCG so I am kind of worried about what I won't know until then.

Re: Pap smear WDYT?

  • I had a pap on my first appointment when I was about 5 weeks. I did not spot afterward, but my Dr assured me that if I did spot, it was very normal.

I wouldn't worry too much, but if it will put your mind at ease I would ask to have a blood work-up done, or ask for an u/s.

  • I"ll be getting a pap too during my 1st appointment.

I think you're okay even if your bleeding a little.  There is a lot of extra blood down there so if your cervix was irritated at all then it can bleed a bit.  Just watch it to make sure it stops and doesn't get heavy.

  • I had a pap smear.  I have not heard anything related to paps and m/c but I did have a little blood with the pap and the dr. said that was normal.
  • I know in my last pregnancy my doc did a pap  on the first appt. I think that will happen again on my next appt because it has been over a year since the last one. (after my son was born they did one at the 6 week check up.) I don't have any info on this but I think it is pretty much procedure unless you have had one done in the past few months.
  • having a pap at the first appt is VERY typical. I highly doubt it causes miscarriage, though it can cause harmless spotting. I went in to my doc last week for some spotting for no reason and she did a pap while she was checking...no way would she have done that if she thought it could CAUSE m/c... also had to go to ER yesterday morning for bleeding and passing large clot, and again, they did another pap while they were in there... very standard.
  • Thanks so much everyone, its barely-there spotting so it should be fine I am just a natural worrier so I am especially anxious.  I feel better though.  It makes sense to spot a little bit since they were scraping the cervix and everything I suppose.

  • I had a pap at my first appt for my last pregnancy.  I think it's fairly normal practice.  And I'm sure doctors wouldn't do it if t could cause miscarriage.  I think a little spotting should be normal.  I wouldn't worry right now.  But before week 20 (not yet) you could get a doppler for at home, so you have some peace of mind that everything is okay.

I'm seriously considering this.  Although, I am also going to a midwife because its covered under our provincial health here, so she may do something earlier too.  I think a doppler would be good though.  haha I would check once a day if I could.

  • I had a pap at my 8 week visit but did not spot. ?I have heard that this is very normal, and have never heard of a pap causing m/c. ?I would, however, insist on an u/s asap, not because there is anything wrong, but because you should not have to wait until 20 weeks. ?That is just crazy. ?I have already had 2 and will have another one before 20 weeks.
  • I had one at 8 weeks.  I was really nervous and asked my doctor if I HAD to have it done.  She reassured me that it was normal/standard procedure for women to have PAPs during their first OB visit if it had been a while since their last one.  She also assured me that PAPs DO NOT cause miscarriage.  I'm glad that I had it done because something came up on it that my doctor and I will need to keep an eye on.

  • I got a pap @ my 1st exam w/ DD @ my old OB and I got one @ my 1st appt for this PG @ 7.5 wks.

I am going to a midwifery group now and even though they said they only do the one ultrasound, I asked if she could do a quick confirmation one @ my first visit so I could see the heartbeat so I could relax and she did it for me.

  • I didn't get a pap at my first appointment.  I had brought a copy of my last one and it hadn't been a full year yet. I think they only do one if you're due for one. A pap at anytime, pregnant or no, can cause some spotting and I've never heard of it being related to M/C.
