corruption in my old church

My FIL is a pastor.  We used to attend a church that was pretty big.  I wouldn't label it a mega church, but we had two services and at one time three.  My FIL used to be an associate pastor and pretty much was in charge (not control) of everything but the finances.  My FIL and MIL live in a small home, drive used cars into the ground and don't have much money at all.  They are still paying off medical bills from their son who died of cancer 9 years ago.  He was basically given a seed church off the big church last year.  FIL is perfectly content with his ministry.

Meanwhile, the senior pastor has built two mini mansions from scratch and at one time lived in a mansion in the city.  He drives a huge truck and his wife is always wearing the latest clothing styles.  Senior pastor has two sons who are "pastors" who recently dropped their own churches- (one of which my FIL picked up,the other fizzled into the ground) to come work for dear old dad.  They spend 40 hours a week doing construction and maybe 2 hours a week if that at the church and they get paid a full pastoral salary.

If you want to talk about corrupt, this is it.

Re: corruption in my old church

  • I really think you need to edit your title to say corruption in my FIL's church. This is not a fair representation of my church, so I don't want this to be seen as a representation of the church as a whole.

  • report them to the bishop or whatever would be the higher rank.
  • The accountant at my grandmother's church was stealing thousands of dollars without anyone know for years.  It was so sad when she was finally discovered due to her parents had gone to that church since the 40's.  Her parents were so upset as were her kids that were very involved in the church.
  • I don't know what religion you are but I have seen my share of corruption from various churches in my previous religion. I grew up baptist & went to baptist school and the PK's would run around doing whatever they wanted & never got in trouble because their dad's would be guest pastors for chapel services. The one who had 3 daughters who were just terrible ended up stealing $ from the church to go out w/ his mistress. He got her pregnant & ended up losing his church. Another (my actual former pastor) cheated on his wife & just left the church. He sent an email explaining what happened & that he'd be living w/ his mother in TN. There were several others but those were the worst. I switched to a basic bible church and so far, thankfully, no drama. It takes a toll on the congregation, young and old.
