So I am off to my NT scan in a minute. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Can't wait to see our peanut! I'll let you all know how it goes when I get back!
Can I ask a stupid question? What is a NT scan? I have my 12 wk check-up in about 2 wks and my Dr. didn't mention having to get any other tests right now, but yet I see people talking about it on here all the time so it must be a common thing to do? Sorry to be annoying...
It's a "screen"...a blood test when you first go in, a ultrasound at 10-13w that measures the fluid on the back of the babies neck, and another blood test at 15w. Taken all together with the baby's age, and your age...they can statistically chart how likely it might be that your baby has Downs (1 in 200 vs 1 in 5000, etc). It does give false positives sometimes, but can also let you know if more testing (like an amnio) might be called for. I wouldn't worry if you don't have one...it's not required by any means, and especially if you aren't over 35 and are having a normal pregnancy, isn't not really needed.
thank you so much for the information! I do remember them mentioning some test that was optional but I guess it slipped my mind and I don't think she told me the name of it. thx again!
