1st Trimester

Zits like a highschooler :o(

I know that acne is common to some pregnant women... what products (ie: face wash, astringent, spot treatments) are safe to use while pregnant in 1st trimester?

  • My face looks like a grease ball. My skin is just so oily and nasty.... no matter what i use to cleanse my face..next day...BAM...pizza face
  • My OB told me to wash my face with noxema three times a day.  I'm going to ask him if I can do anything else, but as of right now, I'm just washing my face.
  • same here!! idk why, tho, because when i was pregnant with my son, i didnt have this problem! Now, i just wash with my regular face wash (clearasil), but i put alittle powder on (i think its by covergirl, and it has noxema in it) and i put it on a couple times a day, and definately before bed so my face isnt so greasy, it soaks up the grease! they are finally going away, and knock on wood, but i haven't had any new ones appear!! let me know if it works for you!! GOOD LUCK!!
  • Has anyone been told that anything with SALICYLIC ACID is not good to use while pregnant? I've read it in a few places, but not sure how credible those resources were.

There are oral daily medications for acne that contain salicylic acid - those are not safe for pregnancy.  There doesn't seem to be much definitive info on the use of a small amount of topical creams that contain it - some people avoid it to be safe, but I have also heard of women's doctors rolling their eyes at them when they mention it.  I would ask your doctor and do what feels right.

I stopped using it because both my face wash and my foundation (both Neutrogena) contained it, and that seemed like it might be a lot to me - but I haven't found another foundation that works as well for me as my old one, so I'm thinking about maybe going back, just with the foundation.  I don't know.

I'm using the cvs brand version of Cetaphil for face wash now, which works okay and doesn't have salicylic acid.  I feel all of your pain though - I am breaking out too - on my face and back (ew!)

  • so far ive been using the same products as before i was pregnant (proactiv and clean and clear moisturizer).  my face, at this point, is clear as day but the back of my shoulders is awful, totally a mess (id rather have my shoulders a mess though than my face so im not complaining). my dr hasnt told me not to use anything specific but im going to ask tomorrow when i go to my second appt.

when my sister was pregnant a few years ago her doc said that it was fine to use proactiv and it ended up being the one and only thing that worked for her.

  • I've been using a face scrub (Jason) daily, instead of face wash. It seems to be helping.

  • You can't ingest salicylic acid, but you can use it topically. It's the only thing that works for me.  If you really want to avoid it, though, get a washcloth and ivory soap and scrub.  I don't know what's in ivory--battery acid? All I know is it dries out pimples in a hurry and the washcloth nubs exfoliate.  That's what I used for the first pg and it cleared my skin (but it was rough!)  Now I use Estee Lauder Perfectly Clean Foaming Cleanser and Neutrogena pore clearing astringent (it does contain salicylic acid).  On my body I use Phisoderm Blemish Free Body wash.  So far so good.
