1st Trimester

WWYD?

I need opinions girls.

Little background:  I"ve called in to work a handful of times in the past few weeks due to m/s.  There have been days I've gone to work sicker than a dog, and other days I just couldn't muster it.  I also just had my annual employment evaluation and my supervisor, who has been really cool about me calling in, mentioned in the eval that my attendance and "unexpected absences" are the only semi negative mark he could give me.

Well yesterday I had to leave work at a half day because of an appointment.  This was already planned so not "unexpected".  I got home yesterday evening and started feeling really gross.  I got feverish (I cannot for the life of me find my thermometer so I don't know what my temp was...) and my throat started to hurt/swell.  So I took some tylenol thinking it's probably just allergies or a cold or something, no biggie.  Went to bed at 930 last night feeling icky.  Proceeded to wake up drenched in sweat, DEFINITELY with a fever, throat VERY swollen and painful, and woke up at 1130, 1am, 230am, 430am and finally just gave up and didn't go back to bed.

I took more tylenol at 230 and it broke my fever for a bit, but now i'm starting to feel warm again.  (it's 5 here now).  Obviously I need to go see my doctor, but I'm really concerned about calling in again this morning....

Would you just take tylenol all day and go see the doctor later or would you go this morning first thing?

Re: WWYD?

  • I would go to the doctor first thing and call in at work.

If it was me, I would sit with my supervisor when I went back to explain about why I've been calling in sick.

It's not like you're only 5 weeks.  You're pretty close to your second tri and I think your boss deserves to know you're not just slacking off.

  • When he did my eval and talked to me about my attendance I explained that I was pregnant and that's what had been going on.

I am going to go to the doctor first thing, because now my fever is starting to warm up again and I feel nauseous.  I think I may have the flu...ugh.  I may call HR and see about using some of my FMLA time to cover these absences.

  • FMLA will also "CYA" if you take sick days - if you are out on FMLA, your boss can't dock your evaluation for missing work (although, I think it's wrong for him to do that even if you aren't using FMLA). (I know this because I am using it for doctor's appointments and stuff for a medical condition).

Also - did you know you get 12 weeks per calandar year? So, if you take some time now, that doesn't mean you get less time off next year when you have the baby.

I am also using FMLA for a different medical condition I have and for pregnancy.  I just wanted to add that you should check with your HR dept. because at my work, they call it a "rolling 12 weeks", so it doesn't go by the calender year.  Instead, they look back 12 months from the current date and calculate how much FMLA time I've taken.  You can use it for Dr's appointments and any pregnancy related "sickness".  I hope you feel better soon!

  • I actually just called HR and was told a couple of things that are good to keep in mind.

I have to be off for 5 consecutive days before they'll let me use FMLA instead of sick time.  (they want you to eat up your sick time before taking FMLA).  And it's a "rolling 12 weeks" system as described above.  So thesea re handy tidbits to keep in mind.

I see the doctor at 11am so they'll tell me if I have some illness that makes me have to be off for a certain period of time.

Also, this may be TMI but I just threw up and there wasn't anything in my tummy to throw up....so I got that icky yellow bile stuff....NIIIIICE.
