Smelly Belly Button

I have noticed today that my baby's belly button has a weird/bad odor.  He hasn't lost little stump yet.  I lifted it up and it's still hanging on by a little bit. There is no redness or oozing at all. I rubbed alcohol on what I could tonight.  I googled this and couldn't get a clear answer.  I read one thing that said to make sure your son's penis is pointed downward so that it doesnt get the belly button wet> well I haven't been doing that and now I'm super paranoid.  Please tell me if the smelly is normal.  Also I feel like my sniffer is on high power still from pregnancy but there is for sure an odor.

I was told at the hospital to keep the belly button dry or else it would get an odor or possibly become infected. They told me to just sponge bath and not submerge baby in water until stump fell out completely. Maybe it got wet in the bath? DD's was a little mushier when it finally fell off but it never had an odor that I noticed. I'm sure it's fine if it doesn't seem irritated.

My DS had the same thing!  I got so sick when feeding him because the odor got to me.  The smell went away after it fell off.  I think it got wet once.  Just make sure to keep it dry from here on out
