Taking DC on a business trip

I am taking DS on a business trip with me.  It is a long story, so I won't go into the reasons.

Can you please help me think through the logistics?  I will be carrying my diaper backpack and my laptop bag on the plane.  I will also have DS and his carseat. I am attaching wheels to the carseat, so that he can ride in that through the airport.

This just sounds like a lot to me.  Have any of you been through this and/or found a good way to consolidate?  And, no, the laptop will not fit in the diaper bag, and DS' stuff will not fit in the laptop case.

Re: Taking DC on a business trip

  • i bought a duffel bag from vera bradley that I can bring onto the plane that can hold baby stuff and my stuff.

i've checked the carseat and brought the stroller, but yet, my child is still a lap child . .

Do u need the carseat?  r u renting a car?

u can also mail stuff to the hotel to consolidate and bring less bags.  I've done it for domestic trips.

  • I do need the car seat, because I am renting a car.  I have wheels that attach to the car seat, so I can use that as the stroller in the airport.  I am not taking a stroller at all.

I would prefer to take one bag if possible, but I am really struggling to find something that will hold everything.  I like the one that the PP suggested.  I didn't think about the fact that I have to take the laptop out.  Good grief--between taking the laptop out, taking off my shoes, taking off DS' shoes, trying to get everything (including the carseat) on the belt AND trying to contain DS, I am going to be quite the sight at security.

  • Remember you'll have to take out any liquids you're taking for DS too.

So at security you'll have to... maybe take off your shoes, take out your laptop, take out your own 1qt baggie of liquids if you have one, take out a bag of liquids for DS (juice boxes, milk, snacks etc) but that can be a bigger bag, take DS out of the carseat, get the carseat and all the stuff on the conveyor belt.

I would take 2 bags because I feel like when my bag is very full it's more likely to get searched, and they never really get everything back in there. But I'd probably try to pack it so everything that needs to come out at security is in one bag and the other bag can hopefully stay closed so it's less to mess with.

And don't forget to carryon a change of clothes for youself. The only time I've ever needed one was at the airport and I ended up wearing my SS's spongebob hoodie after I got puked all over me. Not fun.

Bwahaha...I'm sorry you got puked on.  :(

Seriously, we will be quite the spectacle.  I will let you know how it goes. I have traveled with DS before, just not by myself and not with all of my business stuff (laptop).  Fortunately, he is at the age where I don't have to worry about formula or BM.  I will just take an empty sippy cup and buy some milk or water on the other side of security.

We leave tomorrow morning.  I will let you know how it goes!

  • you don't necessarily have to take liquids out .  i didn't for the trip I had a couple of weeks ago . . I mentioned that there were liquids in the bag (for DD) and they said fine . .

I wear slip off shoes for myself, makes it easier to take shoes off and on going through security.  The last time I had to take DD's shoes off, but she stands and so, I had her and I walk through security hand - in -hand.

yes, you will have to take out laptop, but keep it in an easy accessible place . .

finally, with regards to further liquids . . i had the juice and stuff in a cooler, so that it would be easily removed . . and with the diaper cream . i leave it free in my bag and this through multiple security checkpoints and no one said anything.  I just tell them i have baby items.

  • I recently took DS and DH on a business trip + combined vacation and we ended up shipping our clothes etc since we were going to be away for 12 days. I'm so glad we did because all we had on the day was DD stroller and my pull along High Sierra backpack which held my laptop, our wallets, milk/juice, and DD diapers, wipes, extra clothes and some snacks.

Only issue is whether you can pull/push two wheelies at one time.

    Good luck!

  • One idea:

If you have a sling or carrier you like, you could wear your DC in the airport, and pile your bags on the carseat and wheel them around.  that way you still have one hand free.

One note--with the wheels thing we had for our carseat, we had to take the carseat off it to fit the carseat through the xray machine for security.  that was a little bit of a hassle, as it was not a super quick thing to unscrew the carseat. so, be prepared for that if yours is similar.
