My sister is naming her baby girl this. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds silly? What are your opinions? Obviously, she isn't going to not name her baby something based off of what a message board I go to says. I am just curious.
It's definitely a very strong, unique name. I have heard WAY worse and at least Marie as a mn gives the kid a more traditional option should she hate her name.

completely agree.
it's a nice break from some of the mediocre names i constantly see repeated on this board.
Unless they have Greek heritage, it sounds like the parents picked it to "sound smart" but don't realize it's not that great. Like Nevaeh.
This is what I think! My sister and I are Latina, and the baby's dad is Irish. No Greek heritage. I am superstitious and think that naming your daughter after a war goddess is bad luck, but she is saying, "but she will be smart, because Athena was also the goddess of intelligence". The name sounds pretentious to me and very Neveah.
I like Athena and do not think it is a name that is out there. It is a bit more unique, but I still think it is a name most ppl will have heard of (due to the Greek Goddess).
I love the name Athena and was actually considering it but my child would have to go through life with people saying "Athena. Are you Greek?" and she'd say no because neither me or my husband are even .5% Greek. And then its just weird
I had a student the last 2 years named Athena, with no Greek heritage at all. She is now a freshman at a prestigious college I think it is out there in the US, but maybe notn elsewhere.

I think it would defiantly fit better if your family was of Greek heritage. However, doesn't everyone hate when people give their opinions on names chosen before LO is born? I see that as a common subject on these boards...

Athena is a big name to live up to but honestly I don't think it's terrible. Is the family Greek?
ETA: Ooops, should have read all the responses first! A little strange to have an Athena who is not Greek but still I don't think it's awful.
I knew a Zeus in HS and he was just about the coolest kid ive ever met.
