Preemies

How long on reflux meds?

The previous post got me thinking - - how long was your preemie on meds for reflux?

My 29 weeker is now at 1 year and she's still on Zantac 2x/day, but I'm hoping to trial off of it soon because it seems like it's been so long.  What's your experience been like?

Thank you!

  • Aubrey started at about 4 or 5 months actual age and is now 13 months.  We're going to attempt to ween her off it now.
  • Have you done a trial off of it? We had to take Marino off of Zantac before his allergy testing (12 months old) and I noticed no change in his spitting up so we stopped it. I was just saying last night how amazing it is he never throws up anymore!

  • Robbie started them when he was in the NICU and still going at 16 months. We won't be stopping any time soon.

  • SBM - did you wait until your son completely stopped spitting up to trial off?

My daughter still has a small spit up once or twice a day, and am wondering if that means she's not ready?  Thanks again

Well, we had no choice at the time we did the trial. He needed allergy testing and Zantac is a mild antihistamine, so we needed 3 full days off antihistamines to do the testing. At the time he was still spitting up 1-2 times a day but that didn't increase when we had him off. 3 months later, he spits up maybe once a week.

  • We did a trail off meds (Prilosec) at 6 months, which failed and we restarted.

We did another trial off meds at 10 months, which worked great! No return of vomiting or pain.

She still spits up occassionally but we have no problems!

  • We're still on them at 6 months adjusted / 9 months actual.
  • We're still on them, but we've weaned off Reglan and Axid and now just use Prevacid.  Hopefully we'll be able to get rid of that one soon too, but we'll see.

  • DS was put on Reglan and Prevacid while in the NICU.  The first 2 weeks after discharge were insane - LOADS of spit-up and screaming.  Then we went to the pulmonologist to have his monitor checked.  The doc adjusted the Prevacid, which made kept the screaming at bay.  When DS was about 4 months, the pharmacist asked me how long we were going to keep him on the Reglan.  I asked her why was she inquiring and she said b/c there are some pretty harsh side effects after long-term use.  So I went home and googled "reglan" and discovered that there can be muscle twitches/tremors.  At that time, we noticed DS did have a tremor in his leg, so we decided to ween him immediately off the Reglan.  He seemed to do well, so 2 weeks later we decided to ween him off the Prevacid and use rice cereal to thicken his formula instead.  It was a total success.  DS has been off his reflux meds since he was 4.5 months.
