When do I know when spitting up = throwing up? Problem?

So my son has started spitting up more...I EBF, so I'm not sure how much he is getting in---but he seems to be spitting up a lot more. ?

I'm not sure if it is a problem or if I need to take him in, he seems to be gaining weight...but the main question is when does spit up become throwing up and a problem?

?TIA!?

  • My pediatrician told me that throwing up is only a problem if it is projectile throwing up.

Also, the one time my DD threw up I knew it was throw up.  She gagged more, I could feel her stomach contracting...it sounded so mean and rough.  Spit up is like throw up's P&R.

This.  DD spits up pretty regularly, but the one time she threw up she was laying in her crib and it hit the wall.  I picked her up and she threw up enough to soak her self from head to toe, drench my shirt and leave a big puddle on the floor.  Def. different than spit up.

  • Actually, it's all vomiting.  Even spitting up.  Curdled or not.  Chunky or not.  Foul smelling or not.

Spitting/throwing up is only a problem if 1.) it causes your LO pain, 2.) LO is not gaining properly, or 3.) it hits a wall.

  • Has his amount of wet diapers changed? Pedi said that is something to watch for.
