Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

when do kids start getting into "American Girl" dolls?

I just received a catalog for DD and I am excited.  It's expensive but I'm thinking a doll for Christmas or a birthday would be appropriate.

Is this for girls 3+?

Re: when do kids start getting into "American Girl" dolls?

  • I'm going to wait on the historical American Girl dolls until they are old enough to read the books. As silly as it sounds, I became a history teacher because of American Girl dolls. I feel in love with them in grade school, but was never able to get one until I bought it myself - in college :)

I might get the girls a Bitty Baby for Christmas this year, or birthday next. Still haven't decided...

  • 1st or 2nd grade... when they can start to enjoy the books maybe?

  • I will probably get DD a baby one for Christmas.  My DD loves baby dolls.  I figure it will be awhile before she is really into the "American Girl" aspect of it though.

  • My mom bought DD one last year for her first christmas, and we just opened it recently and put it on her dresser.  She is not old enough to play with it, the box says age 8.  She loves looking at her doll, and she will say hi to her doll, so cute!

  • My niece started playing with her Bitty baby around 2 or so.  She is now 5 and has a few of the bigger girls.  By far her favorite is the girl that is made to look like her.  Isabelle goes everywhere with her.  She got 1 girl for her 1st birthday.  No, she couldn't play with it then.  But, it started her collection.  She has gotten new accessories or items since.

Yes, they are ridiculously expensive but when I have a girl we will be having quite an American Girl collection.

  • I think my mom started reading me the books when I was in kindergarten.  The stores are so neat!

  • I found this website of a Momma that makes American Girl clothes and accessories.  They are so cute and stylish, yet cheaper than from AG.   Feel free to check it out, especially with the holidays coming :)

  • DD loves her bitty baby.  We'll wait on the other dolls until she can read the books.  I had four growing up and three of the four are still in good shape (Molly's hair got wet and ruined!), so she will get those when she a little older.  But for now the baby is great.
  • Even the Bitty Babies are for 3+....but my brother and sister in law got my DD one for her 1st bday...and she LOVES it!! I just take off any small clothing pieces...since they do not have hair, I felt okay with her having it. I didnt really see any other choking hazards. She does not go anywhere without her and the Bitty Baby comes with a small boardbook...it is her fav! HTH!
  • My niece was three. And she's obsessed now.

Now she's 6, and she can tell you all about the American Revolution because of Felicity.

  • My niece will be 7 in Jan and her birthday/Christmas present from us is a trip to the store in NYC and a doll.   Since they are so much $$$, SIL wanted to wait until she was old enough to appreciate it and understand the books.    The 2 of them have been reading the books together for months now and niece really wants the doll from Colonial times.   She says that's her favorite.
