Possibly Stupid Question: Onesies or T-Shirts for Newborn?

Are you ladies putting your newborns in onesies or T-shirts (with no crotch snaps) at first? I have read that you should use the t-shirts to allow the umbilical stump to dry out, but we have received a ton of onesies as gifts and I am wondering if I should go buy some t-shirts.

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question!

  • I don't think this is a stupid question at all! I'm actually wondering the same thing now...

  • I don't think this is a stupid question at all, and I am very curious as to what people are planning, too.  I've been debating the same thing.

  • T-shirts, because when DD was born they were much more easy on her healing navel.
  • You can use onsies....Tshirts are annoying cause they ride up!  I used onsies with both my kids and it was fine!
  • I was planning on onesies since thats what I had mostly. Until I went to my sisters and she gave me the wrap style shirts with cuffs for newborn that she stole from the hospital (shes a nurse). So I have like 4 or 5 of those that I will probably use in the very beginning.

  • onesies.  t-shirts always rode up exposing his belly which is annoying and not good in the middle of the winter.

  • I preferred onesies when DD1 was a newborn. T-shirts never seemed to stay down. They always bunched up, and I worried about DD's tummy and back getting cold. We didn't have a problem with her umbilical stump drying up.

  • I never used any t-shirts with Layla, all I had were onesies. Obviously you're not going to put anything that's too tight on LO, so I don't think it's a big deal :)?
  • onsies and button down sleepers.

  • Ok, thanks for the advice ladies. I think I'll just stick with the onesies.

  • I was planning on using onesies.  That's pretty much all I have!
  • On the advice of our childbirth instructor we stocked up on side-snap tees for the newborn stage and I am so very glad we did. H has lived in them since he was born.  They are good for the cord stump phase and so easy for diaper changes (and easy to get on and off, which comes in handy if you have a spitter upper like I do). Right now we dress him in a tee and diaper during the day and he stays covered with a blanket and at night we use a Swaddle Me.

I have been told this many times... i will be doing the same.  Cotton is breathable so the onsies will be fine during the first week and on.

  • I got both.  But I didn't think about the belly button either...

The best things to get are the long sleeved onsies with the hand mits on them. The regular mittens did not stay on our little guy, and these ones with the hand mits built in were the best for our little guy until he moved into 3 month sizes.

  • I am planning on picking up some t-shirts, just on the advice from my birthing class instructor. She has a ton of onsies already, but no plain t's. I'll try them both.

  • I will be using regular onesies. I also love the kimono style that I have seen around!
  • We've always put our kids in onesies as newborns.  I look at it this way, if you put them in an outfit with buttons or a zipper, the t-shirts ride up.  Do you want the zipper rubbing on the umbelical stump or have the protection of the onesie in between?  I've never used those t-shirts because all I've ever heard is how they ride up.

This. You can buy the t-shirts or side-snap onesies if you WANT but it's not necessary.

  • Hospitals use T-shirts - the do ride up, but they're easier to put on/off and you don't have to pull them ove LO's head.  I like them better.  Make sure you buy long sleeves with hand mits.
  • Both. I got both at my shower. I figure either way, I will have LO wrapped up to cover since it's winter, especially if I only have a t-shirt on. I don't think it will make much of a difference.
