throwing up blood and GERD

my friend just called asking if I had heard of this and I wasn't sure if any of you had.  she has an appointment at her pedi this afternoon for her son bc of this... He has has terrible GERD since he was born and she said that today he threw up some blood with his normal spit ups.  He does not have teeth breaking through yet, but he is teething.  Anyone heard of this happening before?

Re: throwing up blood and GERD

  • DD spit up a little blood a couple times and we totally freaked out. Then we realized it from from me, my nipples had been bleeding. Hope it's nothing!
  • Loading the player...
  • Throwing up blood is most likely from the mom. GERD can lead to ulcers (which can bleed) in adults, but I've never heard of ulcers in babies.

  • He is not breastfed...so it can't be from her.  I wish that were the answer.

  • Tell her to google H.Pylori. I like the Mayo Clinic's website.

DD has had this twice, though it doesn't usually come up in conversation with the pedi because young children are supposedly not at risk. We found out via blood panel (we were having her tested for food allergy b/c she KEPT throwing up).

Symptomatic H.Pylori only affects those who have an underlying problem; i.e. GERD (which my DD also has).

Most likely IF it were H.Pylori, it WOULD mean she has an ulcer.... and they have found that most ulcers actually come from this bacteria.

That is the only reason I know of for blood, but it most certainly probably isn't the ONLY reason.  There are a lot of different symptoms that she can find on that website to see if it's worth a mention.

I really hope that helps. Poor thing!!!!
