Does this make me obnoxious?

My niece's bday is next week and my SIL sent a list of present suggestions--all of them things like clothes and shoes. ?There's no financial hardships going on or anything on their part and I decided I just don't want to be the aunt that sends her niece shoes for her birthday. ?

I want to buy her fun stuff--so I just ordered a bunch of toys. ?I made sure they were wooden, educational and gender neutral (all requirements LOL), but they are TOYS. ?

Is it bad of me to go outside of my SIL's list and getting my niece what I wanted to get her? ?I just hate the idea of getting her boring gifts. ??

  • Personally, I think sending lists is obnoxious ;)

So no, I think what you did was fine.

This.  And you didn't send obnoxious, noisy, crap plastic toys, so definitely reasonable to me :)

  • well, Hooray, not plastic, but I did send noisy. ?I got her the Melissa and Doug "Band in a Box".?

and yes, I did it on purpose. ?LOL, so maybe *that* was obnoxious of me! ?

  • Oh, it's a perfect gift!  LOVE the M&D band in a box  :)  Good choice!

It has to be less obnoxious than the Yo Gabba Gabba guitar BIL gave N for Christmas last year.  That, um, "disappeared" after a couple days.  :)

I agree that lists are obnoxious unless requested, and your gift sounds great.

  • I agree with the list is obnoxious.   How old is is her child?  My kids would be sad if they didn't get any toys for their birthday/Christmas.

  • I guess it's pretty forward of her to send a list, but we have so many toys, our kids don't appreciate things any more.  We have a small house and are overrun with the toys MIL gives her.  What we hate most about them, though, is that they are plastic and not educational.  I bet she really was just trying to avoid all that.
  • I always preferred people outside of grandma/grandpa or ourselves to get our kids clothing or books.  WE were the ones to get them toys.  My DD loved clothes by the time she was like 4.  She was never into dolls and just loved clothes.  My DS was really happy with shoes!  He is still a shoe freak.  probably has about 40 pair not counting flip flops and sandles (and he's in his 20's!).
