3rd Trimester

Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad...

Listeriosis?

I remember being super freaked about this back in 1st and 2nd tri. Now I've loosened up quite a bit. I even dared to eat some mozzarella today! And it made me think... "Huh. I haven' heard people talking about listeriosis in 3rd tri so much as I did in the other two." Do people still worry about this, or have you gotten over your listeriosis fears?

Later!

NOTE: Mozzarella is, I think, fine to eat. (I don't think I've ever a cheese that wasn't pasteurized, either.) But I was a nut job about listeriosis. Like, wouldn't go in the same room as a Caesar salad (KIDDING!). So eating some mozzarella today without shame was a huge victory for me!

Re: Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad...

  • Mozerella's considered a soft cheese??? Ahhhhhh I've been eating tons of it!

  • Meh. :) I think mozzarella is actually fine, but I avoided any cheeses that fit even the semi-soft category. I'm not kidding when I say I was fanatical about listeriosis, so eating mozzarella is a huge step for me!
  • Hmm..that stinks..I've been eating TONS of mozzarella. But I'm kind of over listeria..I still watch what i'm eating and stay away from the soft cheeses...but I'm not as cuckoo as everyone was 1st tri.

  • Is your cheese pasteurized? You don't even have to worry about it, if it is. I don't eat cold cuts and only eat pasteurized cheeses, but I don't worry about anything else, really.

This is me! I screwed up so many times.

  • I thought about giving up soft serve because of it... then decided to chance it when they came out with girl scout cookie blizzards. Confused

Oh, and while mozzerella is "soft", it's usually just fresh that's considered soft cheese.  And even then, if it's made in the US, it's pasteurized and you don't have to worry.

Crack me up! Agreed. Those things are soooo good.

  • are you in Italy or something? Where are you getting non-pasteurized mozzarella cheese in the US?
  • To tell you the truth I never really worried about it. I ate lunch meat all the time, and still do.

  • When I was given a cold turkey sandwich in L&D I decided it wasn't worth worrying over.

However, I still steer clear of raw eggs- I don't eat Caesar salad or cookie dough.

  • I never really got all the hype.  I've been eating just as I did before (minus fish and alcohol).
  • Mr dr gave me the okay on soft cheeses all the way in the beginning...  She said unless I buy it from a street vendor in China Town, it's totally safe.

haha me too.  I actually was never very strict about it.  I eat a deli meat cold-cut sandwich about once every week or two.  I even had blue cheese once.  I didn't eat the goat cheese when I was in Mexcio.  That was about it.

This exactly.  In fact, I ate a ham sandwich today for lunch.

  • ya, I'm not gonna lie, I've eaten my share of deli meat, hot dogs, feta cheese and many other kinds, I love cheese!  And I've eaten ceasar salad and accidentally licked the spoon from the cake batter and pancake batter when making that...

I'm still here and so is LO.

  • I've heard that if its pasteurized its okay, and most meats and cheeses are pasturized.
  • In the beginning I did not eat any cold cuts, but recently I have...the other day I wanted an Italian sub sooo bad...so I had one

  • I don't think listeriosis is a fear to get over. It's not like being afraid of spiders or something.

We probably don't talk about it here because everyone's already made their decision one way or the other and everybody knows about listeria issues so there are no questions to ask.

Personally, I choose to abstain from foods that are a listeria risk. I'm the one who has to live with myself if something goes wrong. It doesn't bother me if other people choose to consume those foods, but it's not for me. I can wait a few more weeks for soft serve, Caesar salad, and deli meat.

  • you have a better chance of getting listeriosis from fruits and vegetables than you do from cheese or lunch meat.
