Shower Invites vs Baby Announcements

I feel uncomfortable with some of the etiquette surrounding these things so I thought i would ask my sister bumpies...

My stepmother is throwing a 'shower' for us but it is really just a dinner with family (no games, favors, both sexes, etc.). I would guess some or all of those folks will be bringing/sending presents. However, I want to sent birth annoucements but don; want them to be taken as an ask for gifts. Perhaps just send an email announcement? Would I send a birth announcement to those that attended the shower? I don;t want anyone to feel obligated to buy anything - I just want to share the good news - especially with family living far away. Got any advice?

Re: Shower Invites vs Baby Announcements

  • We're sending birth announcements to practically everyone we know... not just people invited to the shower. Just don't put registry info on the birth announcement... people will know you are just sharing the good news. I think its pretty well known that an announcement does not mean you are looking for a gift.

  • Because the baby will be born before the holidays, we are doing a combined holiday/ birth announcement. Depending on when you give birth, maybe you can do a Happy New Year/birth announcement?
  • whenever we recieve wedding or birth announcements i never consider them a request for presents, just ppl sharing their happy news....we'll be sending them to everyone
  • I don't think people feel obligated to send gifts.  I we sent out probably 30+ announcements and nobody sent additional gifts.
  • We're doing announcements/happy new year cards.  I think most people want to see pictures and have something to put on their fridge, what not.  I wouldn't go out and buy a gift for someone who sent me an announcement, and I wouldn't leave people out of seeing your bundle of joy because you think you may get gifts.
