Babies: 0 - 3 Months

HUGE umbilical hernia ...

So, my daughter was born with a HUGE umbilical hernia - like, the size of a lime. It seems to be getting bigger, which is totally scary. Doc says it doesn't bother her, and that it should go away in the first year, or by age 3. If not, they would do surgery :(

Does anyone have any experience with this? When did your LO's hernia go away? Was it huge, or just the more "normal" smallish one?

Re: HUGE umbilical hernia ...

  • My friends lo had one. His seemed huge, but I can't remember the exact size to compare it to anything. His went away within a year and a half.

I hope your dds goes away, so she doesn't have to have surgery!

  • Yes, our DS's was pretty big, like the size of a silver dollar.  It has now fully gone away (as in the past week). It got slightly bigger, and then progressively smaller.  Do not bind it, or press on it.  My pedi wasn't worried at all.  He told me it can take up to two years before they will even worry about it.

  • Our LO's is maybe 3/4 the size of a lime. Our doc also said not to worry about it, but it can take until they're 7 to completely go away. He also said they could do surgery if it bothered us but it's medically unnecessary (so obviously we're not getting it done).
  • DS has one too. It was really big as well but it has slowly gone  down. I was very worried at first because it would pop out more when he cried so I tried not to let him cry at all. The doctor said it was ok, here it is, it got slightly bigger than this and right now it is actually smaller.

  • DS's just started to go down little by little about a week ago - he's 3 1/2 months, not gone completely yet though.

Gibby's is a bit bigger than this. it was a lot smaller and got bigger but in the past week it seems to have gone down a bit.

Gray had one too but it is already gone.

DH had surgery for one 4 yrs ago... not bad at all.

  • Gianna's is like this too, but I think it's starting to go down.  I hear that they can get to the size of an orange.  I hope your LO gets better soon!

  • DD had one that was huge at first.  Our pedi said the reason why it was so large was because of her gas issues pushing it out.  It has gone down some now that her gas has calmed down, and the doctor doesnt seem to be to concerned about it.  However, I wish DH could understand that.  His biggest worry is that she will have to grow up with an outie (not to sure what's so bad about that).

  • both of mine developed them shortly after birth, DDs was really small but DS had one the size of a key lime or tater tot (lol). They were the same as your LOs in that our pedi wasn't worried about them, said they weren't big enough for organs to get hung up in, and that they'd most likely resolve by the time they went to kindergarten (!!!). Then at 3.5-4 months, one day they looked a little smaller and after a few more days I could tell they had closed up.
  • After seeing those pictures I am thinking my daughter's is bigger than I thought.
This is when she was 3 weeks old.  I don't think I have any other recent ones that show it.  It is a little bigger than it is in this picture.

My oldest had one and it was gone by 6 months or earlier, I really don't remember.
