3rd Trimester

So, one of my cats peed in the nursery and

I am furious! ?As any cat owner knows, cat urine smell is potent and does not go away easily. ?So, my questions is, what can I use to clean the carpet to make the smell go away? ?I have tried Petzyme spray but we ran out and I wanted to get opinions from you all about stuff that works well!

I will freak if this becomes a problem. ?For now we are closing the door to the nursery and other guest room but when the baby comes and our live become more chaotic (in a good way!) I can't rely on me, hubs or visitors to always remember to close the door. ?

TIA!?

  • Ewww!  Cat urine is the absolute worst!  I think you need to put tons of cleaner down and let it soak into the carpet pad and possibly the floor if it got all the way through.  There's no easy way to get rid of it.  What a bummer!

  • You can use white vinegar and dilute it with cold water - I think it's a one to one ratio.
  • OMG - All I can say is that I feel your pain.  Our dog peed in the nursery TWICE last night.  And while not quite as potent as cat pee - his pees are enormous.

Seriously, my hormones sent me into tears last night.  I was so so so pissed.

Unfortunately, I don't have suggestions for you - as I find the enzyme stuff to only be mediocre at best, and we are going to solve our problem by putting up a baby gate at the door (which obviously won't stop a cat).

Just wanted to tell you that you are not alone!

  • Natures Miracle.  If it doesn't get out the smell, nothing will.  Is it in a spot where you can pull back the carpet and apply it to the pad as well?

We're dealing with this same issue with one of our cats and will probably be ripping out carpeting this weekend b/c we just can't get rid of the smell.

ETA:  The girls on the pet board also recommended Feliway plug ins to stop the cat from urinating there in the first place.  If you google it you can read more about it.

  • Personally, I would have the carpet professionally cleaned. When I had cats, they peed everywhere, and no matter what I tried (all of the above), it never really came out, and they continued to pee in the same spots.

  • Oh no!!!  We use Woolite Carpet Cleaner to clean up after our cats.  It seems to do a pretty good job.  I can never smell any smell left after.  We don't let our cats into the nursery, office, or our bedroom without supervision, but 2 of our cats have figured out how to open doors.  We currently put down door stoppers to keep them out of places they shouldn't be.  I had a friend tell me that cats don't like citrus smells, maybe you could get a citrus scented air freshener in there until LO comes and the cats won't want to go in there at all.  Good Luck!

That's terrible! ? I was so pissed to and was saying how if they peed on one more thing I would get rid of them! ?Of course, we never would, but I was so angry and got super protective over our baby's space and stuff! ?I really hope this doesn't become a frequent occurence for either one of us!

I wonder if Feliway works. ?I will look it up.?

  • I know this sounds crazy but in the past I have used windex....something in there works really well.  My SIL recommended it and she cleans houses for a living...works well every time!  We are putting a screen door on the babies room to keep the animals out but let us see in.  It'll be on a spring, so it will close behind us.  My cats dont pee in there (knock on wood), but they do like to explore everything...good luck!
  • I also have heard of people putting screen doors on baby rooms to keep out cats...

  • I feel your pain... Our cats have peed on our down comforter more than once (something about the down feathers I think) and when they are over $200 you don't want to just throw it out.

Petzyme works the best but if you have run out there is another solution, Salt!

When our cat had an accident on the carpet my mom instructed me on an "old fashion" method. We poured almost an entire container of salt ontop and let it sit for about 4 hours (it should look like a mountain of salt). The salt soaks up the urine and then you simply sweep up the mountain then vacuum  the rest. After that I use other stain/oder removers just incase, like natures miracle or petzyme, and push the liquid as deep in as possible and let that sit for a while. In the past to really get the smell out I used petzyme on the same spot for a couple of days before I was confident it was out.

If you don't the cat will pee in the same spot repeatedly even if you can't smell or see anything.... they can!

  • The Complete spray that they sell in the pet section in Target. It works wonders! My cat got a UTI and peed all over our house and it took the stain and smell out of everything. We also use it on hairball stains, etc. It really is a miracle worker!

  • Nature's Miracle.

If that doesn't work, get some Anti-Icky Poo spray.  It is more expensive- but it totally works.  It has a yellow label.

Make sure any enzyme cleaner you use that you leave it to air dry.  That is how it breaks up the nasties.

  • Ditto Anti Icky Poo. I really feel your pain. My boy cat, the pretty one with white on his face in my avatar, is horrible about peeing on our furniture and clothes. I hope this is a one-time thing for you guys.

  • Plain white vinegar and warm water.  The vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the urine.  It works great!  Just FYI - Keep an eye on your kitty to make sure there are no additional changes.  The cat could have a urinary tract infection.  Urinating outside of the litter box is one of the first symptoms.
