Anyone see a geneticist?

We've been referred to one from our pedi.  He wants to see if there's a link between all of DS's issues.  If you've seen one or know about it, I'm wondering what to expect.  What will the doc do?  What tests are done?  How long is a typical appt?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone see a geneticist?

  • We saw one with Claire because she was diagnosed with a very rare metabolic disease. ?Fortunately for us, it was a mistake but we were encouraged to keep our appointment anyway. ?(I still don't know why!) ?Anyway, she just asked us a million family history questions and did a general examination on the baby. ?I'm sure there would have been more entailed if Claire actually DID have the disease she was originally diagnosed with, but for us that was our experience with a geneticist. ?The entire appointment lasted about one hour. ?Good luck!

  • We did.  Be prepared to answer TONS of family history questions.  I wasn't prepared for how in depth they would discuss every issue.  Whatever your test results may end up being, they talk with you at great length about the statistics for risks of issues.

  • We did before I was pregnant because my twin brother had Down Syndrome.  So we wanted to see what the chances were that we would have a baby with it and be prepared.  It will obviously be a little different because you already have LO but they just asked a TON of questions about family and did some blood tests.
