Late ovulation and short luteal phase...

Hi!

I have a 25 day (ish) cycle and I don't ovulate until about the 16th day (based on charting).  So that only gives me a 9 day luteal phase (which I know is too short).  Sometimes I even start spotting on the 22nd day which means my progesterone isn't doing its job.  Does anyone else have this issue?  We tried IUI last month and when they put me on progesterone it definitely worked to hold off my period until day 29 but the IUI didn't take.  I'm wondering if instead of IUI I should just try natural conception but then go on progesterone sometime around day 20.  Testing for infertility showed that I don't have any obvious issues (aside from the short luteal phase).  Could it be this simple??

I need a little more background before I can give advice.  Wouldn't you have tried natural conception for at least a year before moving IUI?  and cd16 is not late ovulation at all.

It doesn't sound like your problem is late ovulation, but more like a LP defect.  I don't ovulate until day 18-20 and have an 8-9 day LP.  While comparatively neither of us have really "late" ovulation (compared to some women that ovulate on cycle day 30, 40, etc), it's later in our cycles.  I was told that it's likely I'm not ovulating a quality egg (I had cycle day 3 testing which is what resulted in this dx, not the "late" ovulation) and it is likely I'll end up on clomid to help resolve this.  I also used progesterone suppositories this month, starting 3 days after I ovulated.  I'm now 18DPO, no AF, -HPT.  I took the progesterone for 14 days.  I should have AF any time now.

We meet with our RE today to see what he has to say (we think we're dealing with poor sperm too, but that could be a false result).

You need to speak with your doctor about your LP issues and see what they have to say.  You might try a couple of timed intercourse cycles if finances are a concern.

    Good luck!

Actually, its strange.  We got off birth control back in January of this year but weren't officially "trying" until May.  Then during the month of June I got my period twice in one month and got worried so I went to my OBGYN.  When I told him we were TTC he did an HSG (minus dye) and told me that I had PCOS and a host of other issues.  So thats what prompted me to go to an infertility specialist so early.  The specialist repeated the HSG (with dye) and said I don't have PCOS and there aren't any other remarkable issues.  So while we were there he convinced us to try clomid and an IUI.  It seemed early but, hey, we wanted to be pregnant.  Then when it didn't take we were devastated and became even more fixated on getting pregnant.

So thats why it seems like we're reverting backwards (to natural conception).  My OBGYN (I've since changed) had me convinced that we would have a lot of trouble TTC and then the fertility specialist said there is nothing wrong.  I'm very conflicted!  So now I'm trying to figure out what the issue is and I landed on my short luteal phase...

Wow, your first OB sounds like an idiot....and that RE too if there were no issues.  In that case, yes....I would try naturally for awhile.  Your body can take up to a year to regulate after birth control.  GL!

I agree with that for sure!   We're trying to find a new RE that will take things a little slower and then be aggressive only if/when necessary.  Part of me wishes that we'd just waited the one year but I had to be seen for those two periods (which I think I finally linked to the fact that I missed my synthroid dosing two days in a row).

    Thanks for your help!

What does your new OB say about your situation?

I was ovulating kinda late in my cycle (CD 17-22) and had a shorter LP (10-11 days).  My OB told me to call when I got a BFP and she'd put me on progesterone.

I'd see what your new OB says, I know there is testing to see what your progesterone is like after ovulation.

    Good luck  :)

My worry is that I won't make it to implantation before my estrogen kicks back up and I start spotting (on approx day 22).  I think I need progesterone before a BFP.  I'll see what my RE says this month.

Thanks!  : )  GL to you too with your pregnancy!  Its nice to hear that you got pregnant despite your CD 17-22 ovulation!
