PPD - who to talk to?

I am pretty sure I am dealing with PPD...but I don't know what Doctor to talk to.

Option 1:  My OB - which seems to make sense - but I don't really like her and am not comfortable talking to her.  The last few weeks of my pregnancy were hard and I didn't feel like she was very supportive.

Option 2:  My family doctor - who also happens to be my pediatrician.  I love her and would have chosen her as my OB except a couple years ago she stopped taking OB patients.

Regardless of who I talk to, I am upset about feeling this way and nervous to talk to the dr about it.

Re: PPD - who to talk to?

  • Since you feel comfortable with your family doctor talk to her. Don't feel bad or nervous it is very common and getting help i sthe best thing you can do. GL

  • You could talk to either. No matter what though talk to someone! You clearly need to feel better and there is no shame in feeling the way you do, just get the help you need and want.
  • I'd go with your family doctor if you feel more comfortable with her. It's okay to feel nervous - just know that you're doing the best thing for you and your baby by asking for help. I've gone through it too. If you ever need someone to talk to - you can PM me.
  • Why do you think its PPD and not baby blues? I would still put in a call to your OB as dealing with PPD and baby blues is part of ?heir specialty. They can run some tests to see if its a thyroid problem which causes the hormonal imbalance and in turn causes the blues. If it is PPD they can refer you to someone that can really help you as PPD is a serious condition. It happens to a lot of women and can be normal. The important thing is that you talk to someone. GL and lots of hugs
  • Talk to your family doctor since you feel more comfortable with her, but I would also let your OB know. Just in case you decide to stick with her for any future children you may conceive, they will sometimes put you on meds before you give birth to ward off the PPD if you have a history of it.

  • I'm currently dealing with PPD and I talked to my family doctor, and now I'm seeing a psychologist as well. I think it the bravest and best decision you can do. Talk to whoever you are most comfortable with. Your pedi is just as well versed in dealing with it, I'd imagine.
