LO is breathing strangely....

I'm sitting here listening to her sleep, and she's breathing really quickly....not like panting, but how you might try to get lots of air after sprinting for awhile - deep, fast breaths.  I'm worried she might hyperventilate.   Every once in awhile, she'll suck in a few quick breaths, slow down for a few seconds, and pick back up....is this something to be concerned about?  She doesn't seem phased.

Re: LO is breathing strangely....

  • It is funny that you posted this. My LO has been doing the same thing. Our LO's are almost the same age so I am wondering if this is normal???

  • DD used to do this and I asked the Pedi about it, he said that infants breath at about a rate of 30 breaths a minute but that does not mean that they take one breath every two seconds.  Basically it is normal.  As DD has gotten older she doesn't do it as often.

    Hope that helps.

  • You know, she doesn't normally do it - she will every once in awhile, but never for this long. I wonder if she's either really deeply sleeping or really lightly sleeping.  I'm just not sure....Hmmm.

    That does help!  Thanks!

  • I'm normally a lurker but I had to reply to your post.  One morning my husband also noticed my LO breathing hard, almost panting.  Throughout the day, I noticed it coming and going and finally that's all he did.

I called the pedi and they told me that due to his age (9 days at that time) it was best just to take him to the children's ER.

So we got there and his pulse was 250- almost double what is normal for a newborn.  Everything after that went in fast forward, nurses rushing to get him and doctors coming into the room.  His pulse later was over 300.  They tried other stuff to help him but eventually had to give him a medication that "only for a split second" stopped his heart to get it to re-set.  Talk about horrifying.  But since then, he has had no other episodes and he's now on a regular medication.  He was dx'd with supraventricular tachycardia.

This turned into a 3 day hospital stay in the PICU.

When in doubt, I would call the dr.  I had looked this up online and info I found said it was normal when it obviously was not.
