Giving gripe water

LO gets the hiccups several times a day and or course it's right after a feeding.  My attempts at giving him gripe water haven't been good.  More on his shirt than in his belly.  I squirt a little into his mouth, following by a pacifer (to help him swallow) but it really never works well.  Any tricks?

Re: Giving gripe water

  • DS liked the taste of it, so we could just put the dropper thing in his mouth and let him suck a little. It was actually more of a lick. Once he realized it was tasty he let us squirt the rest in.

He never needed as much as the bottle said we could give him, though, so we didn't need to struggle much with him.

  • Put it in his bottle.
  • Try putting it slowly into his cheek, like you would medicine, taking many breaks to let him swallow, that seemed to work for me. If I just squirted it into his mouth he would just push it all out onto his shirt.
  • I just realized you probably bf....
  • We have used a syringe (the pharmacy at target gave me a free one when I asked to purchase it) to give it to him before, but normally just would put it in his bottle.

  • hold a bottle nipple by itself (no bottle attached) and just pour the amt of gripe water into it and hold it right above them. they will suck the nipple and get the 'meds' out

I have the same problem - I'm going to try this tip!

  • Try holding him in a cradle hold and letting his head tilt just slightly over your arm (so his chin is lifted up a bit). We then put it in his mouth back toward his cheek and just slowly push it in. The head position almost forces him to swallow and it goes down without a problem. I think someone posted awhile back that this head position actually causes the swallow reflex to kick in or something...

  • With any medicine, I angle the dropper towards LOs cheek and slowly push a little at a time.  I can also blow lightly in her face and it makes her swallow.
