Just had a fight over the phone with dh about the H1N1 vax.

He wants the kids to get it.  I do not.  I feel it was rushed and dont want my kids to be guinea pigs for it.  I read online that in 1979 (or 70 something) they did the same thing by rushing the swine flu vax and it had horrible side effects and some people died.  I had already been questioning the safety of something so new and then read that.  Kind of sealed the deal for me.

So dh has a friend who is in med school and was asking dh if the kids have gotten the H1N1 vax yet.  Dhs words were "they need it now, its about to get stupid"  I was like "what is about to get stupid?"  He was freaking out about the swine flu.  I told him its just another strand of the flu.  Nothing to worry about.  He still swears that if the kids get it that it will be the end of the world.  He is mad and says I make all the decisions about everything. I dont.  I have just done some (not much but he has done none only listening to his friend) research about it.

So.  If my kids dont get the vax and get the swine flu I will never hear the end of it from dh.  But if I get them the vax and something happens and they have a reaction I will never be able to forgive myself for caving.

Not sure what Im trying to say other than venting.

What have you heard about the vax?  Are you getting if for your kids?

I feel like Im on a debate team against dh all of the sudden.  Ahhh!

Re: Just had a fight over the phone with dh about the H1N1 vax.

  • I will get dd the regular flu vaccine, I will not let her get the new one.  I feel the same as you.  It's too new and untested.

And does the med school friend know the vaccine isn't even available yet??

  • Loading the player...
  • We aren't getting it.  If it was the Bubonic plague or something, I would be putting more thought into it.  We never get the flu shot either.
  • I don't think the H1N1 vaccine is even out yet?

    .
  • This is one of those things you should speak to your kids' pedi about. (I'm assuming you trust your pedi as I do)

This isn't just another strand of the flu, because it is affecting perfectly healthy people differently.

I don't think so either.  I think that CNN was saying October'ish.

  • My pedi said either way we would be fine.  No further details about it.  I dont trust my pedi.  We dont see the same one every time so I try to do my own research and go in prepared to ask questions.

He did say he was not getting it for his own 5yr old son.

I disagree... It IS just another flu stand. One that few/nobody has an immune system built up to. The regular old flu bug affects LOTS of people every year, even puts them in the hospital. People are freaking out over it, and there's no need to.

As far as the vax, I'm still on the fence about it. DS's pedi says he should get it, but I too think it's too rushed.

  • Well, since you just said in another post that your DH's immune system is compromised, I would all get it to help protect him. Assuming your pedi is comfortable with it.
  • I am getting the Vax.  My neighbor works in flu vac research for the CDC.  She is a doctor, her son is the same age as mine and he is getting it.  It was not rushed, it is the same process they do every year of vaccinating against the most common strains.
  • The way I understand it, this vaccination is just like any other flu shot.  Obviously, though, the virus is the H1N1 strain instead of a different kind.  There ARE studies going on with the vaccination and the side effects are the same as the seasonal shot.  I will be getting the vaccination for both my kids and myself.

    this.

and its not even available...so why are you fighting over it now?  you guys have time to discuss it...but if someone in my family had health issues, you better believe I'd try to protect them...

  • What does your pedi say? The "good" news if you still have a few weeks to consider it and research findings. The vaccine isn't even available yet. They are conducting tests on children, so read through those when they become available to make any final decisions.

Here is just released info about child tolerance of the vaccine.

Here are the stats on the pediatric deaths that have been reported so far:

Seven (19%) of the 36 children were aged <5 years (five were aged <2 years), and 24 (67%) had at least one high-risk medical condition, including three children aged <5 years.

Among the 24 children with high-risk medical conditions, 22 (92%) had neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., developmental delay or cerebral palsy). Of these 22 children, 13 (59%) had more than one neurodevelopmental diagnosis, and nine (41%) had neurodevelopmental and chronic pulmonary conditions.

Eight (22%) of the 36 children were aged =5 years with no reported high-risk conditions. Two of these eight children were reported as obese; however, height and weight measurements were not reported.

Among the eight children aged =5 years who did not have a high-risk medical condition, six had a laboratory-confirmed invasive bacterial coinfection, including four with S. aureus; the other two children either had no specimens collected or information regarding bacterial coinfection was unavailable.

Among the seven children aged <5 years who died, two had a laboratory-confirmed bacterial coinfection; neither child had a high-risk medical condition."

This. Supposedly, the vaccine won't be available until sometime in early to mid October. And, they're only releasing three million vaccines initially. So, even if your pedi recommends that your child (and you) get the shot, there's no guarantee that they'll even get a supply in stock.

Actually, I think that there is reason to worry.  I can't help but worry when I see statistics about 34% of all H1N1 infected pregnant women needing to be hospitalized (on the news).  The problem is that young, healthy people are getting very very sick while older people are (in general) having an easier time with the virus.  I'm not an alarmist, but I think worrying is justified.

  • ditto emilykristine.  I would for sure be getting it if we had an immunocompromised person who I interacted with alot.

This is my understanding as well.  A friend who is a microbiologist and studies this type of thing for a living is comfortable getting her 2y/o son vaxed.  We plan to get it if we can (depending upon availability).  DH is a doctor in a major city hospital and one of his coworkers and his family of four that lives 5 blocks away from us all had H1N1 already.

  • I do not know what I am going to do yet especially since DS was hospitalized with RSV and pneumonia so when he gets it in the chest it is REALLY bad.  But I have to say I think your logic is off a little, you argue that in the 70s the vaccine killed some but also say it is just the flu...if you believe that it is just the flu then you should be able to believe that it is just another flu strain and therefore the same process as all the other flu vaccines each year which have new strains.  Just playing devil's advocate.

  • Dh will get it.  He got his seasonal flu shot today.  His dr. (oncologist) will have a small supply of the H1N1 vax and will call as soon as he gets them.

I will talk to his dr and if he feels that I should get it than I will.  Im really not sure about the kids though.

As for being worried about what happened in 1976 I just read another article saying that the vax was contaminated and that is what was causing the deaths and paralysis which was reversible nerve damage.  I do feel better about it now.

That and one poster saying that it wasnt rushed.  I have just heard everyone saying that its rushed, read it a few times online and going with that.

Plus when I took the girls for their 3yr check Sept 4th their pedi said that if we do want it to start calling Sept 15th to be put on the waiting list.  I didnt call because I was against it.  I think I may call tomorrow and put the kids down just in case I change my mind.

DH and I arent really "fighting" over this it was just both of us trying to voice our opinion at the same time and he gets very irritated when I try to prove my point before he can his.  Thats why I felt like I was on a debate team against him.

We havent talked about it since.  I told him I would do more research and call the pedi and his oncologist.

They are offering free seasonal flu shots at the kids preschool so that is good.  Too bad the girls already got theirs.  (flu mist)

  • When it is available, we will all be getting in in our house.
