The Shred and WW.

So, with WW, they recommend that you don't exceed a certain number of Activity Points a day. I think it's 4 points. How does a Shred routine rate?

I'm already doing 30 minutes of high-intensity intervals on the treadmill 5-6 days a week. Is the Shred really going to make that much of a difference fat-burning-wise? Or is it more of a strength building thing?

Re: The Shred and WW.

  • You can only use 4 activity points per day (if I remember correctly), but you can work out more than that if you want.  I think that they limit to 4 so that you don't burn out on the exercise.

Shred is 20 minutes of a pretty high-intensity workout.  Think arm raises with weights while doing lunges.  Your heartrate gets up there.  It is 3 minutes of weights , 2 of just cardio and 1 of abs - repeat a couple of times.

The best way for me to accurately determine my activity points was to use a heartrate monitor.  Figure 1 pt per 100 calories burned.

  • I never realized they had an activity point limit? Hmm, that seems odd. I never count my activity points as extra food points, that would be the only reasonI could see them doing that, so you aren't eating a whole lot more? I guess my point is I have no idea about Shred but if you want to add it into your activities just don't count it as extra points for food.

I think the point limit is so you're not expending more calories than you're taking in. As it stands right now, a straight hour of vigorous exercise would probably create issues for me as I'm not taking in a ton of calories. The new guides provide a sliding scale to help you determine how many points you're earning with your exercise based on three factors: intensity level, minutes of activity, and body weight.

I try not to eat my activity points for faster weight loss. I also don't use my 35 pt. weekly allowance. My leader says to eat the activity points only if I feel hungry.

I guess I'm trying to figure out how to rate a Shred workout in the grand scheme of things.

  • when I did the shred and WW last fall I want to say I gave myself 2 points for it... but I also think it just kind of guessed.

so this probably didn't hlep you at all.

  • I measure it by how quickly I'm not able to talk or sing and how much I'm sweating. With Zumba, it's usually ten minutes in and with hip hop hustle it's sooner. Also, be careful with not eating your activity points. I earn about 8 points per class and I try to eat at least two classes worth of extra points otherwise I gained.

  • My bootcamp instructor told me that an interval workout like Shred burns about between 500 and 600 calories per hour....so I would just go from their.  I think 2 points might be adequate from my WW knowledge though its been a while.
