explain crib bedding to me please

So, if you're not supposed to have blankets in the crib, or bumpers until a certain age either, then why buy a cute bedding set? And what is the purpose of bumpers anyway? And at what age is it okay to put a blanket in the crib?

Also, do you keep a mobile up as long as they're in the crib? My mobile says to take it out at 5 months, but only just now put DS in the crib, so does that mean I can't use it all or do most of you ignore that rule as it seems a little conservative?

  • the comforter is for when they are older. Some people still use the bumpers until they start to roll and i would remove the mobile once they can sit on their own.

  • We use our comforter for tummy time.  Some people drape them over the back of their gliders.  As for bumpers...they're so they don't bump into the rails, hence the name.  Some people still use them for that sole purpose...but since there is a suffocation risk and they don't allow enough airflow, a lot of people don't use them.  We have a breathable bumper and it has just enough padding so that even if he bumps into the rail it won't hurt.  They also help to keep limbs inside the crib.  You also aren't suppose to have them because older kids can use them to climb out of their cribs.  With the breathable, it collapses if you put any weight on it.

They sell them because they can make money off of them, and some people still use them.

As for the mobile...I've read to take it out when they can reach it.  I would think 5 months would be too early.  We'll probably take it out when he can start pulling up to stand...

  • We didn't buy a bedding set.  I bought a bumper, crib skirt and then several crib sheets.

We took the bumper out about a week ago.  DS is rolling all over the crib and we've found him mashed up against the corner of the crib.  I may buy a breathable bumper, but we haven't had any problems with him sticking his limbs out of the slats yet.

The 5 month rule on the mobile is because babies can sometimes sit up by that age.  They can use the mobile to pull themselves up.  DS isn't that coordinated yet, so it's staying up for now.

You can use a thin blanket now, just tucked in and pulled up only to baby's chest.  Thicker comforters and blankets are a no until baby is much older and can move things away from their faces.

  • I use the bumper... DS turns and would hit his head on the crib if the bumper wasn't there.  I have the comforter draped over the side of the crib.  I'll be removing the bumper and mobile when he is big enough to climb and pull on it.  I also use blankets... always have.  They are totally breathable... like the wide looped knitted type.
