what happens when provera doesn't work?

what does the dr typically do? i am now 8 days after my last provera pill (did the 10 day course) and no af. this is beyond frustrating especially since i have taken provera 4 times previously and got af within 4 days of taking my last pill.

my dr. is aware of what is going on and just wants to wait a couple more days in hopes that af shows before he has me come in.

Re: what happens when provera doesn't work?

  • It can take up to 14 days after the last pill for you to start bleeding. I average 3, but I have waited as long as 12 in the past. Every cycle is different. After that, I really don't know, but I would wait a full two weeks before calling your doc.

  • I believe there is a shot that is stronger than the oral medication and can bring on AF within 3 days of a patient receiving it.

Hopefully your AF is just a bit late and will start soon!  But, there are other options to bring the witch on!

    Good luck.

  • thanks lcb! i actually went to acupuncture on friday, so was REALLY hoping that would have worked it's magic over the weekend.  i actually called my acupuncturist this morning to tell her nothing was going on and asked about some chinese herbs to get this show on the road.

  • That happened to me that last time I took Provera.  I did a 10-day round of bcp after that.  That didn't work super great either - brought a really light period, but it was at least a bit of red bleeding.
  • After I didn't get AF with Provera, I went in for an ultrasound and saw that I had no lining to shed.  Because my lining was as it should be on CD3, I just started meds right then without getting AF.  So maybe you will go in and find the same, and can get moving with your next cycle.

  • This happened to me this past cycle.  I got about 6 days of spotting (if you want to call it that.. it was only on the TP) and then 2 weeks after the spotting stop she came with a vengance very randomly.

    GL to you!

  • I went a really long time without a period (130 some days) and my dr finally gave me provera to bring on AF. After taking it for 10 days, AF never came. My dr did bloodwork and it showed that my estrogen was EXTREMELY low. Apparently they work hand in hand to bring about a period. This eventually lead to my diagnosis of POF. Now that I take estrogen, provera works like a charm!

Have you gotten bloodwork done lately to check your levels?
