You probably *could* but it wouldn't be real comfortable for your DS because they'd be all bunchy. The inserts are shaped like the extra huge pads the hospital gives you after having a baby -- long and somewhat narrow. They make cloth inserts for the gDiapers (or other brands of cloth diapers) that would work better.
For what it's worth, my DD was cloth diapered and I thought it would make her train earlier because of the discomfort factor, but she didn't care and I basically had to force her to train shortly after she turned 3.
I wouldn't use the ones you can buy in the store for a gDiaper. A newborn size prefold folded in thirds or one of the pads you stuff in a BumGenius would work.

The prefolds?

Hmm... Ok. I *really* want to try those, but we're so close to PTing I'm still on the fence. Maybe it being uncomfy would make DS want to PT faster?
I'm going to our local retailer tonight to look at buying the gdiaper kit.
