Anyone anemic?

I was just diagnosed with anemia. I feel OK, except for some minor symptoms like lack of stamina and being cold a lot. The doctor thinks the anemia is caused by low iron levels, so I'm supposed to take iron pills and see if that helps.

Anyone have experience with anemia? Things I should watch out for, etc.?

Re: Anyone anemic?

Nope, no bruising. The doctor said I was pale, but I don't see that either. Also said I was probably tired. I've been tired since DS was born, so I really don't notice any difference.

  • I've been anemic for years, & it got worse with my pregnancies. I take a multivitamin every day & additional iron supplements in the evening. I also take B12 with the iron, as it's supposed to help with absorption.

I bruise easily, am tired even when I get restful sleep, I'm pale, etc. It sucks. I have it reasonably under control right now, but my numbers are still lower than they'd like.

  • Try taking iron at night before bed with juice or vitiman C.  It can help asorb.

I've never had problems with constipation at iron supplements.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • As a teen, during pregnancies, and since this miscarriage I am anemic.  I take FerroSequels, which are meant to be easier on your gut. (less constipation) but, they still make me constipated.
  • I have dealt with it a lot in my life. I tried iron pills, and you have all the yucky side effects. Try liquid iron. It works SO much better, and it's instant, and you don't have the weird side effects. It's nasty, but I take it with a glass of orange juice, which helps the taste and the vitamin c helps absorb it. I will never go back to pills. I buy it at whole foods.
  • I was always anemic until we realized celiac disease was causing it.  I took Slow Fe.  Make sure you eat a lot of fiber when you're on supplements though!
