Long day - went to Dr.

Along with everything else I talked about this morning (sleep issues, belly issues, etc) he started with a low grade fever this morning that rose on tylenol and had diarrhea. I took him to the doctor and voiced all of my concerns. I don't feel like I got the right answers but basically he said this fever and diarrhea is either a virus or bacterial. We're going to collect a stool sample. He said the sleep issues are teething and, get this, breastfeeding related. He said the breastfed babies don't sleep through the night as easily, and he just wants to nurse. He said to go ahead and do whole milk int he bottle since he won't take it any other way because he isn't gaining weight. I said he's getting cheese and yogurt everyday and he said he couldn't eat enough cheese to make up for it.

I feel better that I took him, but I don't feel like we've figured it out yet. They said there would be more symptoms if it were celiac or an ulcer. I'm not totally convinced though. I guess we'll just have to keep watching him... and collect that stool sample. FUN!

  • Sorry you had a rough day. I hope your little one is feeling better soon!

  • Sorry it wasn't a good day, but I'm glad you went. Sometimes it seems like just going to the doctor seems to kick things into healing mode for me, so maybe that will do the trick for you and DS...

interesting about the "breastfeeding related" -- i am curious to see what results you have if you follow the doctor's advice.

  • The breastfeeding thing could explain the not sleeping through the night but I don't see how it explains the other issues that you said you were having? I'm not sure I'd chalk it up to celiac though. That's a pretty serious condition and I think you'd be having a lot more issues than you are having now if that was the case. Doesn't mean it's not something else though. I hope you get it figured out for both your sakes.

  • I'm not convinced it's celiac. That's just something that crosses my mind in one of those moments, but I wanted some other possibilities, ya know? They ALWAYS tell me "it's teething". BS!!!!!! It can't always be teething.

It also drives me crazy because I was there for 2.5 hours and spent 10-15 min with them to find out it's "teething" and "breastfeeding". Ugh.

  • I agree that he could just be wanting to nurse (who could blame him for wanting to be with mommy?) but not that he needs whole milk.  He doesn't even need it if he's BFing, but I know you're wanting to wean so it makes sense.  My LC has told me repeated times that as long as she's getting lots of calcium sources she's fine.  We aim for 3 servings of cheese, 1 yogurt and whatever else I can manage in a day.

Anyway, I hope you get things figured out. Maybe a second opinion is in the cards?  Ask around for a BFing friendly doctor maybe?  GL!
